It looks like the 991 is now being tested somewhere in California -- our friend Pete Stout just posted his first impressions here: http://www.excellence-mag.com/of-not...ve-the-new-911 No word yet on a GT3 variant.
I got to see the 991 at Rennsport. Here are some pictures from that event. It appears that the red and yellow car perhaps stayed behind?
The sound is a lot more like 997.1 than .2! They FINALLY fixed the absence of sporty tone in DFI engines! I think that alone is making the 991 worthy upgrade, albeit, I am still NOT happy with the Panamera interior!
I was noticing in the comparison table between the 991 and the 997 that the 991 Carrera engine seems a little weaker than its predecessor. Both have the same torque peak number, but the 991's is 900 later. Although it is rated for 5 more hp, the power peak is also 900 rpms later. This makes it obvious that there will be less power under the curve and that the 991 Carrera could hence actually be slower than its predecessor.

The 997.2 exhaust sound is easily fixed by replacing the center muffler with after market pipes.

I hate that interior, but the rest of the car looks pretty nice. Still not convinced about the eSteering. Need to do badge delete for sure...it's way too gawdy. There will be some bugs to work out too.

On fast, flowing canyon roads around Santa Barbara, and on a test track at the Santa Maria airport (graded and paved specifically for this event!), we were able to thoroughly evaluate Zuffenhausens latest. The Carrera S flat-6 is fabulously torquey, strong at 3000 rpm and absolutely ferocious from 5500 rpm to the lofty redline. And every trip around the tach is an aural treata sliding scale of tone and pitch, that classic 911 combination of resonance, tick and howl with the horn section of a manic orchestra thrown in at the upper reaches.
