991 rear spoiler?
I just looked through the German 991 catalog and found it strange that there were no pictures of the rear spoiler extended at speed?

What does the triangulated body panel do? (the piece just in front of the raised spoiler and below the window...)

Maybe at much higher speeds the spoiler goes up even higher and the extra flaps go up with it to provide even more downforce.
My other WAG is more fun: Mini flaps for extra coolers a la Lamborghini Mercielago.

It's part of the engine cover. If you look at the first picture with the spoiler in the retracted position you can clearly see that its the engine cover/lid.

I was hoping it signaled the design of an interesting two-stage rear wing deployment system.
This screen shot pretty much confirms it's part of the engine lid cover. It's a shame couldn't make the engine lid narrower; having it follow the line of the rear window. Unfortunately it looks like the width of the engine lid grew to match the spoiler.
I always loved how the design of the rear quarter panel flowed from the roof down across the fender to the taillights without any additional panels or gaps...
