Engine choices for 991?
Ok. The cat is just about out of the bag as far as the look/design of the 991. My assessment is that the improvement over the 997 is ho-hum at best. The real way that P could surprise us is by offering a higher hp engine with the DFI. The general consensus is 400 hp which IMHO is a pretty anemic upgrade considering it is a new model. 415 or even 425 with the option of an X51 pckg may make my decision easier.

I'd rather have the same hp in a lighter package. The extra few hp gives you a tiny improvement in straight line acceleration, a loss in weight gives you that and much more besides. The new C2 with a rumoured 3.4 litre 350hp, but with extra weight saving over the C2S (and more sensible wheels), could be the pick of the bunch.

I am disappointed in the decision to reduce displacement in the regular Carrera. This was done for cafe/fuel economy issues only. Although the 3.4l will be rated 5 hp over the outgoing model, I would expect low and mid range to suffer due to less torque. As the gap is now 50 hp between the Carrera and the S (vs. 30hp for the 997.1 and 40 hp for the 997.2), to me the Carrera no longer exists in the model range and I would consider the S the base model. Consider this though, with the lower weight and only slightly less power than the outgoing X51; performance will be at least as good as the outgoing X51/GTS. This should make it an easy decision if considering getting an X51/GTS today to wait and get a new S which will be lower priced in the fall. You will probably see a 425-430hp X51 in 1-2 years for the typical $12-17k option price.
Is it worth upgrading from 997.2 Carrera or S? No. Of course it never really makes economic sense to move from 1 model to the next with a slight improvement in performance.

I agree. The c2 may be the winner and more of a true sports car than the S. I love the power but how often can you use it vs blasting around town just cranking on the wheel, keeping then revs high etc... Will just need to option it up.
Now going from my 997.1 S to a 991 C would drop 5hp BUT I suspect the lighter weight would better performance. Doesn't anyone know the weight differences off hand?

I can't conceive going from a 997.1 C2S to a 991 C2. It would have to be an S model and I think the weight difference I read was about 30 lbs less in the new car. I saw my sales guy and he said he thought they had some build slots for the 997 GTS in Oct/Nov. I suppose this is the other option.

My understanding that the new S would have 400hp helped me make the decsion to go ahead with my new GTS at 408 hp. I had planned to trade for a new 991 GT3 in 2 years so the GTS is, at least for now, an interim car. In 2 -3 years there will probably be a 991.2 with hp upgrade and of course the GT3 will be out. By all accounts the 991 is not a great leap forward, incrementaly better yes, but in keeping with Porsche traditional an evolutional versus a radical change. I like that actually.

The GTS is a heck of an 'interim' car!
