Default Will 991 be better than the GTS?

I think everyone would now agree that the GTS has been a smashing success, and a wonderful car for those like me who want normally aspirated rwd, light quick fast etc. I have been waiting to pull the trigger as I'm sure a lot of folks are to see what the 991 will be like. When I got my C2S in 05 it was such a game changer from the 996 series. Will the 991 be similar, or will it be just slightly tweaked, but muzzled by emissions and fuel economy standards?? Its hard to imagine it can be significantly better than the GTS.

It will be a 'better' car, as it will be faster, more stable (longer wheelbase), even more refined (larger back seating). But... is that what you want?

Its my thought that the GTS will still be a very sought after model, due to its wide track RWD and 408 HP. The 991 may have the same power, but possibly stay with the NB and wide body for the AWD models.
That may keep the GTS values a bit high compared to the normal depreciation of the 997 at model change.

Porsche would not be very smart as a brand if they didn't make the new 911 desirable to owners of current ones.

Boy that is a tough question, When I think about the current GTS it feels like Porsche said "hell, let's get back to our roots" - and I am so glad they did. The trick is trying to guess this is that IMHO Porsche is a much different car company from '05 when they released the 997. They now have along with the 997 / 987 Boxster... a very successful 4-door sedan and SUV.. AND they are now owned by VW... so the world of Porsche has really changed.

I think the 991 will be a game changer... in ways that may surprise us all.... I am really excited to see what Porsche has in store for use over the next few years... it should be a great ride!!

Of course it will be better. Porsche isn't going backwards in this business. Porsche AG puts people in this position all the time. That's how they stay in business.

Good question and, if we knew the answer, it would be a heck of a scoop.

My take is we already know the GTS is righteous, and likely to be a classic 10 or 15 years from now. We don't really know too much about the 991, so it's the "bird in hand" debate.

I will say that many enthusiasts have noticed 911s seem to have a trend of a great model followed by one that is out of favor. The 87-89s are well loved but not so much the 964. The 993 is an all-timer but the 996 (at least pre-facelift) seems to fall short. The 997 is a great, great modern version and the 991 ......

This is very true - but they did replace the 993 with the 996. I wonder how many 993 owners thought that it (996) was more desirable?

That's in hindsight though. We now know the 996 had teething problems and that less traditional styling didn't play well in the long run, not to mention engine troubles. while there are a few who knew right away the 996 was not for them, sales of the 996 were not low. I think at time of launch there was much that was desirable in the 996.

Will 991 be better than the GTS?

No.

Unless it is.

Then, yes.

The one you have and drive is the best one of all.

There will always be something 'better'.

Usually the new model is better, but not always. Case in point - new 535i. When I got back into my 09 after my test drive of the new one I couldn't believe how much better the steering felt, as well as the clutch uptake and the overall responsiveness.

Guess it helps to define what "better" is.

If you go back through the evolution of the 911, I doubt a person could say the next generation was completely better than the last in all respects.
I think in some ways the 991 will be "better", but thats in the buyers mind, seat of their pants, and in their eyes.. not just on a sheet of paper.

Porsche needs to make this a "wow" car to push sales to levels they want to get to. Hopefully its not "gizmos" on the car, but the car itself that is the "wow factor".
