Clear sunroof?
#32
My comments are based on my experience in the Cayman and my frustration in being unable to order my C4S with both a roof antenna and navigation.

You must be talking about the AM antenna which is now mounted on the front wing?

AM antenna
AM antenna, nasty!

For reasons well illustrated by the photo is post #34, I was only interested in a roof antenna but it cannot be fitted to cars with a sat/nav button antenna because the sunroof limits the available space.

I like it. Yesterday was gorgeous out and I had it pulled all the way back all day. Winding through the hills on tight winding roads with that sun shining down on me was perfect. I never have it open on the freeway, but tooling around the hills, it's great.

Looks like a clear/glass roof may be on the way.
While I realize that the Targa has met this requirement in the 997 & 996 versions it looks like the regular 911 will get a clear sunroof in it's next iteration, check out these 991 pictures and the additional breaks across the roof in this spy shot.http://www.autoblog.com/2010/11/11/s...uts-its-stuff/

I'd fully retract mine more often if the buffeting weren't so bad. I actually like the sunroof, and would pay extra for it were it an option. However, I wouldn't want a glass roof in a 911. To me, glass roof belongs only on a sedan or SUV. It just doesn't look quite right on a 911.

My preference? No #@%%&*!! sunroof at all! I need the headroom, and the thing's seems unnecessary (to me). Porsche has all of these variations on the 911, and will build one anyway you want. UNLESS you want (and need) your Carrera GTS with no sunroof; then you're out of luck...

The quality of the spy shots seems to be improving as does the look of the car - less of the odd distortion that some early photos had. And you can really see clearly the front bra covering the headlamps as well as the fake tail-light camo on the rear - but I can't tell much about the sunroof - looks odd - like maybe that could be a lift out - new targa?
Porsche has been doing sunroof in these cars (and their predecessors - 356 Sunroof Coupe) for a long time now - although, seems like they'd have delete option on the higher performance versions.
I like the look of that car above though - seems like a smooth evolution. I gotta get me some of those side vents!
Still looks like some room for surprise when they reveal the lights - hoping to not see any CGT style front lamps - pls.

I suppose it was an economic/production decision but I think it was a bad move by Porsche to eliminate the delete sunroof option. Long story, but I had the entire sunroof assembly out of my '99. Bet that sucker weighed almost 50 lbs and it's mass up high where you least want it.
Porsche would have to crash test the delete sunroof configuration all over again and didn't want the cost/trouble of that.
I've heard this is why we don't get a lot of the optional configurations that are available in Europe, because Porsche wants to keep all the US cars similar enough that they fall under one crash test umbrella.

I believe it's because of the US crash testing regulations.

Blame your fellow Porsche buyers, laws that protect the buyers by not binding them to ordered vehicles, and pressure from dealers on PCNA. Dealers do not want non-sunroof cars on the lot because they don't sell. By not having the option, the problem is eliminated.
Regarding glass vs. metal sunroofs, glass requires another track and mechanism for a shade, reducing headroom while adding weight and cost. Say no.
