Default Tires getting slippery…new tires?

I have a 991S with Michelin 4S. 5/32 left on right and 4/32 on left. If I use moderate power in a curve tires are slipping. I’ve only owned this car for 6 months and it’s my first Porsche with over 400 HP.

Would new rear tires fix the problem? Thanks

It is currently 48 degrees in Greenville, SC.

Those are summer tires. Below 50-55F the performance drops like a rock.

That said, 4/32 is getting low. Consider replacing them soon.

I think you mean to say the tires are just now getting fun!

Temps matter a lot. Even new tires will break free if they are cold. I have an A/C'd garage, so my tires break until I get some heat in them, even on a 110 degree day.

especially if your camber is agressive, the visible outside section of the tire might show good
but look underneath the car at the inside, you might be in shock...
mine were delaminating and start to slow leak.....mesh was apparent

Also PSI is a consideration. If you're going by the pressures on the door jam, that could explain the slippage.

Try 31 front / 34 rear

Might be time to replace due to tires’ age. What are the date codes?

Yes

I have noticed when my rear tires get low (3/32) they get slippery coming out of corners when I jump on it (rrespective of age of tire, or exterior temp or road condition). So -- if that is what you are asking, then that could be what you are experiencing.

Noticed same thing on my 991. New tires that I wore out on a track day. Next drive -- holy crap -- completely slippery. Down to 3/32. New tires, grippy as I remember them being (no alignment, change in tire brand, or other variable).

As jberb said, check the age of the tires. 5 yrs. max, then they lose elasticity, get hard, don't displace water, and you've got a potentially very dangerous situation.

Thanks for all the comments! I think it’s a combination of all of the above plus having 420 HP at the rear wheels. I’ve been used to driving a 225 HP Boxster ha ha

Yes @ 4/32 your tires need to be replaced.

If you are a more of a daily driver of your 911 please consider the DWS 06+ all season. I'm really liking them for daily use as well as the occasional mountain drive.

No offense, but you may want to work on your right foot a bit while awaiting delivery of your new rubber. :-)

Date Code? 5-6 years then they are done.. Will likely show small cracks past 6 years(this is dependace on how they are stored + Climate..

At the end of next season. im switching to DWS06+.. problem solved!!(unless you track.. then get another set)

I bet the cold temp is the primary cause. Low tread depth should not be an issue, except in wet conditions. And IMO age is important, but 5 years is very conservative and not a magic date when reliable tires turn into danger.

I have a older set of PZeros, and they broke loose like I was on ice. Temp was about 40F. I thought my clutch gave out.

My rears kicked out on me the other day. I attribute it to temp of 43 degrees.
