Default MF display goes nuts when I turn the key

This started happening today. When I turn on the ignition the MF display on the dash goes nuts scrolling for a few seconds then it settles down and acts normal again. I tried disconnecting battery to see if that helped but no dice. Any idea?

Bad battery in general? how old is it? That seems to be the likely culprit with electric gremlins like this.

the up or down button appears to be stuck.

it's scrolling through the menus.

But why only when starting the engine?

78 degrees, crazy.

Check for battery health and get a two way scanner and run instrument cluster and steering wheel test.n

I ran a scanner and there are no codes. That's whats confusing about it. It only scrolls for a few seconds then works fine. If I press the button while it's scrolling it will go into submenu and the submenu will scroll so it's definately just getting a scroll command. I'm going to try to spray some electronics spray in there but if it were the button I'd think it would continue to scroll and would not stop the way it does.

If I remember correctly, steering wheel powers up only when ignition is turned on. You can't change volume on the wheel without ignition on, for example. Not sure why it stops after a couple of seconds though. First step to diagnose would probably be to disconnect steering wheel and see if it stops scrolling

I just tried blowing out the scroll wheel with electronics cleaner but nothing so yes I guess I'll have to remove the wheel and disconnect the MF control to see if it's still scrolling. I've seen videos on removing the wheel and see there is just one plug on the wheel that connects to the stalk. Would I have to take apart the wheel to disconnect the MF control by pulling the connector right at the MF module in the wheel? As a sidenote if I just leave just one screen selected on the display setting like "maps" when it starts all you see maps with no scrolling becuase there are no other screens selected to be viewed. So it's definately a scrolling function at startup.

Default Found it.

Mystery solved. I have smart top module installed. Not sure how but one of the options that can lower PCM volume at startup was set to 991.2 instead of 991.1. Not sure how it changed but solved the issue by disabling controller. Then turned it back on and went through all the settings and found that option was causing it.

I appreciate the help.
