Default 991.2 4 GTS Tune: Cobb vs FVD choice

Hi All,

There are a bunch of threads regarding tunes but I have a broader question for all of you who have tunes or driven in 991.2’s with tunes.

I have a 991.2 4 GTS with SOUL headers and sport cats—it sounds amazing and definitely feels faster already. I’d like to reduce some of the turbo lag at initial acceleration as well as unlock some additional power.

It seems like Cobb was (is) the most popular tune here and was the best before they nerfed it. After doing some searching, it sounds like FVD is awesome and particularly well suited to my needs as they will create a customized tune to unlock additional power with my headers and cats—so I am currently leaning toward FVD.

I’ve been offered an opportunity to buy a used Cobb Accessport with tune (pre-nerf) + the Cobb PDK tune for less $ than the FVD tune. I daily drive the car and definitely enjoy some spirited driving every week, but do not track it.

For those that have the Cobb tune (pre nerf) and PDK tune, do you have headers/cats? Do you feel it is worth it? Is the PDK tune overkill for my needs?

For those that have FVD tune with Headers/Cats, I’ve been told the tune can get upwards of 550hp? Any feedback on the power increase? Worth it?

Will I be leaving power on the table using a OTS Cobb tune vs. a custom FVD tune specifically for the GTS turbos with headers and cats?

Appreciate everyone’s perspectives in advance!

I don’t understand the term NERF.

Nerf means to weaken. Cobb weakened their tune to comply with emission standards (I believe).

I have a Softronics tune with my 17, 4 GTS. 2.98, 0-60 time with a 1 ft rollout. 3.17 without a 1 ft rollout. Woke my car up. Putting Vektor headers and cat bypass this winter.
BTW, I ran my fastest 0-60 with the traction control off. The AWD works so well.

I wonder why they can’t offer a 49 state tune along with the California version.

I understand you are looking for a great tune to go with your 991.2 with sport cats and headers.

Have you spoken to Scott at Softronic? My car is equipped with sport cats (no headers yet) and my custom Softronic tune delivers breathtaking increases in performance. You’ll find countless positive reviews on Softronic here and Soul Performance Products endorses them with their exhaust components.

I'm not sure I’d go with a second hand unsupported ECU tune or anything else now that I’ve had a chance to experience Softronic for myself.

Good luck!

This is really interesting and seems to reflect a lot of peoples’ experiences using the Cobb tune after they adjusted it for emissions. Do you know if this pre/post when they adjusted the tune (I think they adjusted it roughly 2 years or so ago).

This is post the "adjustment" V2.0 stage 1 that you can download from the site at this time. I tried to find the earlier tunes but was not able to find one that worked on my car.

Okay this makes sense. The Accessport this person has is before the “Green Speed” adjustment by Cobb but I just read their website and it explicitly states they will not support/offer technical assistance to anyone with the original ECU tune. I also understand that if the Accessport is connected back to a computer it will update to the latest ECU tune and disable the ability to put the original tune on the car. For this reason, I think I am going to go for the FVD route.

You can still install the original tune back, that was done during the dyno run. I did read somewhere that Cobb updated the firmware and does not allow the earlier tunes to be installed on the car. Take that with a grain n of salt as I read it on the internet, but I have v1.02 and does not allow the install as its greyed out.

no grain of salt required—COBB lays out that they will no longer support the earlier ECU tune here: https://www.cobbtuning.com/green-spe...te-april-2022/

Thank you, that answers why I could not install the earlier tune.

I am not sure how they would do that if you can install 3rd party tunes. Wouldn't simply renaming the old tune work?

The tune files generate a checksum so they can deny the old files checksum value or only allow certain checksum values.
