Default So the bride wants a Targa for a daily driver...yes? No?

The missus has been bitten by the 911 bug. She initially wanted a cab, but discovered Targas while looking online. She works from home, so no daily commute. She will need it for local errands, work meetings/showings (she's a realtor), grocery getting, etc. Our children are grown, so not hauling kids around any longer. 991 Targas are in the price range, so will be looking for a low milage model, maybe even a CPO. We live in NC, so we get plenty of good weather and lots of rain in the winter. Hardly ever get a snow. Any downsides to using a Targa for a daily? Thoughts? Anybody out there daily driving a Targa? For reference, her only real experience with a 911 is my 997.2 TTS.

Providing that kids aren't part of the equation, it would be a delightful daily driver and a good look for a realtor.

How will she drive couples in a Targa? Every realtor I've worked with has some sort of SUV or 5-Series sized sedan. Also, if it's truly for use as a 'job' related tool, is she planning on expensing part of usage on taxes? FWIW our past two realtors drove a Q7 and a Macan GTS.

Only other downside, if she's mostly running short errands, it's a lot of starts and stops w/o getting up to operating temps.

Get the Targa because she likes it and wants it. However, I think it's a stretch to think it's in any way ideal for the use case.

I work with plenty of realtors and most of them meet their clients at the showings. Most people these days drive SUVs so it’s probably just a representative sample of the public in general.

I would not be overly concerned about running errands especially in a temperate climate. It doesn’t take long to bring the car up to operating temp. Besides they will probably never own this car long enough for it to matter anyway.

Of all the 911s the targa is very well suited for a DD it is the heaviest version of the 911 and I believe the suspension is tuned to be the most compliant. I say go for it and if you don’t like it you can move on.

You make some valid points and your comment about short trips/operating temps is of particular interest. As far as being used for business use, she almost never has a client in the car with her. She is primarily a listing agent. She is currently driving a SQ5 that I will likely take over as a daily driver and she can use it when she needs some space.

I’m new to the 991 platform. Is bore scoring a thing with 991’s? Most of her drives would get the. engine up to temperature, but there will surely be times that it does not. Is that a huge issue or concern with 991’s. My perspective us from a 997.2 owner.

In honesty, I don’t love the idea of it. My TTS is not a garage queen but I avoid driving it in crappy weather and avoid ‘as many “junk miles” as possible. There will be some junk miles put on hers if we do it.

She’s mostly a listing agent. When working with a buyer, buyers drive themselves with few exceptions. Since covid, even more so.

I am using mine pretty much as a daily driver and put about 10K miles per year on it in Iowa. I am not driving in snow or extreme cold as I have high performance summer tires and since I am not working anymore I didn’t get snows as i did for my daily driver Porsches before. The Targa is absolutely wonderful and there no reason not to have it as a daily driver. With the frunk and backseat space you can do most of your running around and shopping with it as well. For the HD runs and hauling my Great Dane around I take my wife’s BMW X3.

With your milder NC climate it’s even more usable around the year and if you put all season tires on it, she can use it pretty much all year there with very minimal sacrifice in handling. I absolutely love mine and if and when it’s time to get a new (to me) one I will be looking for a 992 Targa GTS for sure.

Hope she will get one - not only will she have a great car, but also the best looking 911 variant!

So far not much concern about bore scoring in the 991 and from what I understand it is more prevalent in colder climates.

Do you think you will own this car long enough for it to be an issue in the unlikely event it happens?

Not saying it wouldn't work...

Buy yourselves what makes you happy but a 911 needs drives that gets the revs up and oil properly warmed on a regular basis.

Direct injection engines can suffer from carbon buildup, short drives aggravate this condition.

You can combat this by using good fuel (I use Shell premium, it has been rated as one of the best clean fuels), regular driving on the interstate and some careful redline acceleration.

Like I did, you may find the best car you’ll ever own.

I have a 2018 911 4s as a daily driver and it's the car I have always been looking for since opting out of motorcycles. Oregon weather means driving a motorcycle sucks! A heated seat AWD 911 in Oregon winter is still an amazing car. A few mods and a tune and you are well within motorcycle numbers with Cadillac comfort!

I am sure she will love it. Mine is a DD with 50k miles so far.
Get one with heated and ventilated seats and it's perfect for year round GT driving, esp where you are in NC.
And as the other poster stated, it really is the best looking 991 variant.
