Default Used 991.1 - Second thoughts

Need a bit of a sanity check here. I read through several posts about 991.2 vs 992 but they were pre-pandemic or from 2021 when the market wasnt as bad. But given the current market, I am looking at paying $100k ish for a 2019 991.2 with 23k miles and warrant for another year. I'm also seeing listings of 2020 992s around 110k, I'm torn a little here, am I making a mistake by going for the older generation for a 10% price difference? I have driven only the 991.2, not the 992, but reading all the posts, it seems its definitely an improvement (especially in the road noise/ ride quality department).

Edit: Now that I look at the specs on the 992s that are in the $110-115k range, they have next to no options and based on their MSRP, basically have a $2-5k depreciation in 3 years, which sounds a little nuts. On the other hand the 2019 991.2 as specd was about $114k and I'll be paying around $97k + TTL. So now that I think of it, the 991.2 seems a tad better value, unless the 992s will hold more value over time?
My plan is to use the car for 3-4 years and then trade-in

I was in the same boat recently! I had a 991.1 c2 and wanted a awd drive version so I could comfortably drive it all year around so was looking at both the 991.2 and the 992s. I highly recommend test driving both as they are the same but different at the same time if that makes sense. Walking up to the car they look similar (ish- like a modern 911...) but once inside they are different. Driving wise I found the 992 more smooth and felt alot like my old S4 in a way (not bad or good just depends on what you want). I ended up though getting a 2019 991.2 4 GTS with a bunch of options and 7k miles that was $10k cheaper than 2020 992 4s cars around here with similar miles. The tech was good enough in the 991.2 for me but is felt just a little more raw which is what I personally wanted. I was a tough choice as the 992 was very good and it took driving them both on after another to make the decision.

In a nutshell drive them both preferably on the same day and dont get too caught up in the options. Just focus on what you are looking to use the car for and what options are important to you!

Agree. Drive them both and compare options. Perhaps more importantly, know available options and those important to you. For example, I would not buy such an expensive car without leather, easy entry or the upgraded lights. I also appreciate sports Chrono and PSE. But that’s me and not necessarily you. Maybe drive a few?

if you are in this depreciation-game, I hardly recommend watching this yourtube video to get some insights on the current market:

I for my part love what I've got at the moment: 991.1 base. MY 991 MY love :-)

My opinion on the question on 8:41: I think the 992 is pushing the 991.2 prices down.

Personally despite favoring the 991 styling I would go 992. They sound better, handle better, and offer more refinement. If you’re buying a 991.2 you’re going after a more modern driving experience anyway (a 3L 6cylinder turbo) might as well go for the latest and greatest.

The 992 interior has been a sore point for some but it’s still got an analog tach and the large screen is far more usable (esp for CarPlay) than the tiny 991 screen. The cheaper interior plastics and headliner/pillars are a downgrade in the 992 but that’s the price of progress. The engine sound alone would push me to 992.

The thread is titled 991.1 but we are comparing the 991.2 to the 992. Did I miss something?

Thank you very much for all the inputs. I backed out of the 991.2, I do need to see and drive the 992 to make sure I'm doing the right thing. If this 991.2 was under $90k I would have not been in two minds, but since it was $104k out the door, I really felt like I might be in for a depreciation disaster and would lose out of the newer tech/better PSE/road noise insulation. I felt its too much to give up for a $10k difference for even a stripped down 992. But again, I'm keeping my options open, I'll drive the 992 in the mean time and I see a smoking deal on the 991.2 i'll be at more ease because it would be well calculated and educated decision.
Thank you again, I've saved this money for a quite a long time and its my first porsche/my dream car).

You are right! I made a mistake writing the title, not sure how I could edit that? I am comparing 991.2 vs 992 indeed

I am seeing 991.2s trading between 85-110% of MSRP depending on trim, mileage, CPO, options, etc. That definitely seems high. A 2018 991.2 is now 5 years old and should probably be more like 60% of MSRP based on historical trends. The market is still distorted from the pandemic… if you’re willing to wait 2 years you may see more normal pricing. But then you won’t have had a Porsche for 2 years.

The lack of availability for the 992's is what's driving the more inflated values for the 991.2's. Wait times persist for the new cars, and the pricing for them continues to escalate.

Availability of the 992 in the near term (at least one year) will probably continue to be constrained. As time goes on, pricing on them will continue to push up.

Wintertime is upon us of course, and the sales of sports cars in general slows down. Adding to that is the ongoing uncertainty with the overall economy. If it were me, I think I would focus on a 991 (either 991.1 or 991.2) looking to negotiate the best deal on the best car available.

Then just enjoy the car.

i own a 991.1S and have driven numerous 991.2's in the past. drove the 992 a while back and loved it! as much as i enjoy my .1S, i'd jump at the chance to own a 992.

imho...the 992 is ahead of its predecessors in almost every respect. i even like the new interior =)

your money/your choice. just speaking for myself here

I love my 991.2 C2S and will probably keep it and enjoy it for many years to come. If it's the only and last 911 I ever own, I'll be happy.

That being said, if I were in the market today for a 911 Carrera, I would most likely have my eyes set on a 992 if I could get one without a markup. Not because I think it's better (although arguably it is from a technological advancement perspective), but mainly because I like the idea of having newer things even though I already know that I can be very happy with my current set up for a long long time.

Other than newness (unless you are budget limited) - which right now seems to mean electronics and turbo (either real or new 3.0) - the issue to me would be turbo or NA.

I specifically chose NA, figuring much of the electronics itch could be solved with Carplay modification, or just ignored as I listened to the high revs.
