Default 991.2 - Eliminating most of the overrun pops and bangs.

I’ve been looking for precise info on this topic for years and everything always turns into opinions but I want facts from people who actually know. I know, it’s hard. 🤦‍♂️

From what I can gather, the different drive modes have different effects on the exhaust valves.

0 : closed until somewhere around 4000 rpm and open more in WoT but never 100% open.

S : Fully open

S+ : Quieter than S so I assume they’re partially open

Now, in S mode we all know the system injects a bit of fuel to create louder pops and bangs. I call it Douchebag-Mode.

Even when in S and engaging Sport Response (center button on mode selector) the douchebag pops disappear. To me, combined with the fact that S+ doesn’t have it either, is a confirmation that it’s purely artificial.

Since I enjoy two things about S mode
  1. The fully open valves
  2. The PDK map is nicer in traffic when I’m tired (the 0 map sucks in automatic)

Is there a way to disable the annoying artificial pops and bangs in that mode????

p.s. If you disagree with my preference, please walk on by and refrain from commenting. I’m seeking an objective answer to my technical question.

thank you.

Sometimes I find the pops and crackle annoying in S mode as well, so I turn off the PSE, this helps, I don't notice any drop off in performance with the PSE off.

Seriously? You’re going to go on an internet based enthusiast forum, express your opinion, call everyone who disagrees with you a douchebag, and then tell everyone not to comment if they don’t agree with you? Hilarious. At least you know the meaning of douchebag.

Your preference is yours and yours only. But is it necessary to imply that the many folks on this forum that don’t mind the pops or even like it and the Porsche team who decided to include it in the system are… douchebags? 🤔🫣

literally did not happen. OP called the S+ mode with crackle tune “douchebag mode.” Which I took as tongue and cheek, nothing to grumble about.

Similar - had FVD tune out about 80% of the snap-crackle-pop in S mode as part of an update.

Lets get beyond the Dbag sentiment and stick to technical answers. I would like to know this as I pretty much live in sport mode and like the open sound of the exhaust, there are times I shut it off cause Im tired of the popping

Protune. More than just power.

When I went to Catless, I love the sound of the car with values closed. Its actually perfect. When they open now, it goes off like a gun shot. Its far to obnoxious for the street.

The issue is, when in Sport mode, I would be cruising with the valves closed, and with a bit of acceleration or when the revs hit a preset point, the valves would open. Then if i backed off, gunshots!

It was too obnoxious, So I had my protuner, raise the threshold of where the valves open. Now i can accelerate in traffic without having the whip cracks.

In Sport plus, it doesn’t do the cracks and pops as that is business mode for the track.

My point is, everything is 100% customisable to those who aren’t tight wads. You have to pay to play your way.

It is achievable, its just not free.

I have even had the shift points moved and had it all matched to opening of valves. Its the way the car should come. 🤣. But its hard to find a happy medium between church goers, track rats and DB’s 🤣.

I agree with OP. The pops in S are incredibly annoying. It's just too much and too often. They do sound great at times, but "popopop" literally e-v-e-r-y-t-i-m-e you let off the accelerator is incredibly tacky. Catless pops on high rev downshifts are amazing though, some serious war cannons.

Porsche goofed on that one and they did some mapping on the 991.2 Turbo models so that the crackles don't fire every god damn time. A much nicer setup.

I do this as well, and no performance loss, however, your engine temp will rise to a level similar to running in 0 mode. Not a big deal, just stating that something changes when you turn PSE off.

You don’t notice any power drop with PSE off because there’s no power gain with it on. It’s just noise. Nothing else.

OP, as far as I’m aware the only way to stop the artificial racket is to overwrite the software with a tune. If you’re really serious, dump the pointless PSE for a quality straight-through cat back system. Better still, add sport cats

I too find the pops extremely annoying and will get a tune as soon as my CPO warranty runs out in a year.

For now, I've programmed individual mode to Sport with PSE disabled for daily driving.

For spirited driving, I switch to Sport Plus but shift to manual gear selection so I can control the shift points. You get the great sound of PSE, and no pops, without the aggressive shift map of S+ PDK mode. It's the best compromise I've found.
