My headliner just dropped while I was away for a week and car was sitting in the garage. This seals the deal for me, no more Porsche. While I do highly rate the dynamics and the sound the mediocre quality just annoys me too much.
I'll see if I can get a date on a new SL or if I'm going to put up with crappy quality maybe I'll bite the bullet and get a used portofino.
Btw anyone know of an upholstery shop in Dallas with a good match for the black Alcantara?

Trust me the grass is not always greener on the other side. Ferrari is notorious for droopy headliners and leather trim pulling up. Benz also has its many electronics issues. Why do you think the values of their higher end models crater after a few years. Just saying before you jump ship make sure you research know problems with whatever you buy next.

A good upholstery shop should get you going. If the car is good otherwise get it fixed and enjoy it a few more years.
Living in Texas and the heat there probably had an impact on the adhesive breaking down, similar to Florida where I live. I try to ventilate the garage as best as I can but even then the summer garage temps can reach mid to upper 80s
For the Mercedes I've had 6 of various segments and the telematics on an E were crappy and I've been through many an air suspension but the quality is on another level compared to Porsche. Switches don't fly out, COV don't go through 12 revisions, very rare to get rattles and squeeks, no rusting fasteners, doors don't warp, I don't have to angle the fuel nozzle to fill up the car, etc.
For the Ferrari that is what keeps me away but at the same time my expectations for the Italians are low so maybe it won't annoy me as much. It's a beautiful car and it's the only V8 2+"2" hardtop in the market.
Really common in 987 and 981 Caymans. Hasn't become prevalent in the 718s yet. The issue has been blamed on the water-borne adhesives that Germany requires. Annoying? Yes. Reason to find a different make car that checks all the boxes my Porsche checks? Nope.

happened to the wife's cayman a few years ago. asked the SA at the dealer about it and he gave me a local upholsterer and he said it happened to a bunch of cars all at the same time, right after we had a particularly hot few days in a row.
We were in Germany at the time and our mechanic fitted an Alcantara liner and it looks awesome. Every car has some inconveniences. About the only issue we've had with the Cayman in over 100K miles.
I bet you could replace it locally and have it go on for a very long time.
Had the same problem. Bought the material for $60, a few cans of spray glue, and did it myself. Turned out great. Mind you that was on my 91 Jeep Cherokee, but I'm sure it's the same idea....
