Default New twists thrown at my life

I have met some wonderful, supportive people through this particular forum, who have shared kind messages regarding my slightly different journey into 911 ownership, and then some of the strange twists of other family members becoming disabled, but being brought home in this car, proving you can get 2 people, 2 wheelchairs and a load of luggage into a 911…. So there have been some interesting developments. Some great, some disastrous, but the 911 is my constant.

so since last posting…and in the start of the pandemic lockdown, I became a father again…. Not the usual way, but a very special 16 year old (then) who had been living with us already for 2 years, officially, legallly became our daughter. And I have been so proud to take her and her boyfriend to school *****, using my 911 and me as their transport means. That was very special. The graduation ball is still to come, but the colour of the dress (sparkling orange) was carefully chosen to work well with the Sapphire Blue car.

So life was good. We were coming out of the pandemic mostly intact, a little poorer in terms of cash but infinitely enriched by the addition of Tesquenita, my daughter.

Then out of the blue, at the start of March, my wife of 35 years, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Not a good version of it either. She has had to undergo intensive chemotherapy in isolation, and we are now at the stage where later this week she will undergo a massive dose of chemo, to completely wipe out her own bone marrow, and then her sister has been identified as a good match, and will donate stem cells to enable my wife to hopefully survive with new bone marrow. The 911 took her in and out of hospital and takes me in each day, as I visit (suitably gowned, masked, distanced, and covered in alcohol (wheelchairs pick up viruses easy so I spray them all over)) each day. I can cruise safely with the adaptive cruise control if my eyes become a little misty on the way home. It also is my space…I need to be strong and optimistic for my wife, supportive and optimistic for my daughter and sons (both of whom work overseas), and be the provider of information to our family back in England (we emigrated to South Africa 30 years ago). So the 911 can take me away quickly, very quickly when I need to refresh. It is my own constant.

I am not posting for sympathy (**** on pity), but I have shared so much of my life journey with this car on here, I felt almost obliged to update. I don’t do the praying stuff, but is any of you do, and have a reliable line to any god, please try putting in a good word for my wife. She doesn’t deserve this, and we had planned some lovely long trips in the 911 all around South Africa in our retirement.

You are an amazing father, husband, and a gifted writer. I always enjoy reading your posts. Prayers to your wife.

I have been on the National Bone Marrow Donor list for many years. I hope someday to get the call to help a person like your wife.

Thanks @LexVan , you reminded me that was the other thing that I was going to ask! Luckily we found a good donor within our family, but I would ask anyone wanting to help to do as you have already done and register as a bone marrow donor. I similarly registered many years ago, when my occupational therapist’s husband was searching for a donor. I didn’t match him, but he did receive successful treatment. Thanks for your support; this has been a wonderful forum of like minded, friendly people on an internet that appears mostly to be dominated by others!

This seems an appropriate place to show the true value of any 911. This is a video of a friend’s son, who had been very excited when he found out that I owned a Porsche 911. Of course, one of the essential responsibilities as a 911 owner, is that we can never turn down a request for a ride from anyone under the age of about 17 / 18. This ensures that we pass on the 911 gene / virus (delete as appropriate) which will safeguard future ownership dreams.

So sorry Dissol. My wife Kate was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer one year ago. She's doing much better than expected but we know the tide will turn. The inevitable hangs over us but we are enjoying what we have-- planting a new garden, buying a 1971 911T for some lovely summer drives (Kate said, "why not get a perfect one"), and planning a trip to Spain this fall. Live your life forward and pull the family together to celebrate the good days. It gives us the strength to imagine a time without these wonderful women in our lives.

It’s an amazing story to hear and what you are preserving through. I believe in God and his plan and can only imagine he has one figured out for you and your family.

From your words the 911 is a journey and an escape - one that helps bring you to peace and brings you closer to your loved ones. I love hearing how a car can do that and how versatile it has proven to be.

I can’t imagine the heartache but I can relate to how the car can transport you away - even for a minute or two to a better mind set and state of being. Enjoy the miles and I hope the road ahead is one you and your wife can both experience soon again when she is better.

No words to ease what you are going through, but you have a great attitude, and that is 9 tenths the battle. Stay positive and things will work out. All the best for you and your family.
