Default Any regrets going from PDK to Manual or vice versa?

Hello Gents - title says it all - I googled it and did a thread search - found this 6speedonline post below - not very informative.

I know @desmotesta just went from PDK to Manual on a 911.1 GTS - what is the word any regrets yet? has the euphoria worn off?

Anybody gone either way and regrets it after a few months? Ie Manual to PDK or PDK to Manual? Maybe share a on why you did it and then what were the results? I can be an impulse buyer especially when I get excited and worked up - I have wasted years not to mention $$ trying things I assume I will like and then realizing I do not and inevitably cursing myself for wasting the time and money…. Sharing too much? (Worst example bought a X million dollar home only to sell it 8 months later.. idiot)

Some decisions in life cost a lot of $$$$ and still leave you unsatisfied

Glad to report that my switch wasnt one of them. Happy with the switch and never ever ever going back unless I lose a leg or other unforeseen health issues arise

this thread should also help you

Manual - PDK

I believe this question and any related topic was banned from this forum about 10 years ago.

Oops! My mistake if that is the case - I see a lot of threads making the case for each option the individual choose - but rarely people sharing regrets over the change or the experience simply not being what was expected.

For example great recent thread on “DSC being meh” for many users

However, with that said, Desmotestas link did have some good comments I had not previously read.

991.2 has one of the easiest clutches I’ve ever driven. Drive whatever you want, but no one should be afraid of the clutch in these cars being difficult. I live in the LA area, so I’m pretty sure traffic is worse here than a lot of places. I’m still rowing my own gears, even in my Tacoma. It’s the only way for me, but it’s also what I grew up with. A lot of people I think find it difficult to change because they are afraid of something new being hard to do and possibly failing at it. If you want to learn manual, just buy a manual car and do it. You’ll suck a bit at first but within a few days have it figured out and only get better from there. A bit of embarrassment from stalling at a stop light won’t destroy your ego that badly 😊

I couldn't imagine buying a 991.2 without a pdk. Doesn't make any sense to me. A 991.1 maybe, if you twisted my arm.

I've had both, no regretzky's with either one. 991.1 C4 in PDK and 991.2 C4S in manual.

It comes down to what you want from the car, how you plan to use it, how many other toys you have in the garage etc. Answer is different for everyone, no wrong or right answer on it either.

I am a big fan of manual so my bias is there, but PDK is fun too, way better for commuting or stop and go etc. I don't do track days so I am not focused on lap times.

I can see why this topic was banned. This thread has the potential to be one trillion pages long with no winner lol. Unfortunately, this is a decision that only you can choose.

That’s all this forum is.

“what exhaust?”

”what suspension?”

”991.2 or 991.1?”

”GTS or?”

”PDK or manual?”

Porsche sells however many billion options so you can pick what is right for YOU. Everyone has different wants/needs and all of the options have pro/cons that will help meet whichever needs someone has. People are often looking for validation in their choices instead of just doing what makes since for their own needs and just enjoying what makes them happy.

991.1 With PDK, 968 with six speed. I would’ve rather had a manual (seven speed) in the 991, but the car had all the other options I wanted … S, crono, cab, full leather, sport exhaust, good color combination, low miles, CPO, sport design package (so it looks unique).
IMO, the manual just makes me feel more engaged. Both porches are “fun cars” mainly driven on back roads, so it’s not like I’m slogging back-and-forth in rush-hour traffic.

PDK is a great transmission, my mechanic thought I was crazy for considering a manual, and several club friends also thought I was crazy for considering a manual. Anyway, to each their own, either one is better than a sharp stick in the eye … or no Porsche at all !!

Prior to getting a 991.1, had several manual transmission cars (including a 987.1), and given the rave reviews about PDK, thought I'd give it a try.
Great transmission overall, and the seemingly unique ability (for dual clutch transmissions) to go into neutral by pulling both paddles simultaneously allowed me to drive the 991.1 more similarly to how I drive an MT vehicle.

But it got boring, and I came to regret not having gotten a MT 911 instead.
Also, I didn't like the slow speed behavior of PDK, such as with parallel parking on hills in San Francisco into tight spaces.

A forthcoming baby forced me out of the 991.1 a bit earlier than I would have otherwise parted with it (only had it for about 18 months), but being bored with PDK made that less painful.

A few years later, was able to get back into a 911, and this time, no way would get PDK.
The MT in the 991.2 is a big part of the fun.

MTs will disappear sooner than dual clutches.
If you decide you don't like the stick, will be easier later to find PDK replacements than to go the other way.

There is only one reason I go PDK, I am shrinking as I age and it is no fun having the steering wheel straight at your face

Now with only 1% of new cars in the U.S. coming with a manual, it’s becoming super rare, if not all but extinct.

I always drive manual cars, but once had a BMW SMG (version 1) that ruined an otherwise great car (M5). However, the PDK is nothing like that SMG. The PDK is really good.

How do you rank the transmission choice on a car? For me, it’s pretty high on the list for street driving, but on the track, I prefer PDK. And if you have any knee issues or hate clutching in traffic, go PDK for sure.
