Default Rock chips - how much work should I put into fixing?

Hey folks,

I'm six weeks into my 991.1 ownership and life is GOOD. I love the car and have put about 1,100 miles on it since I got it which puts me at 37,800 total now. Mechanically, it's perfect and I've been on many spirited drives and it's just great. However, I do have a cosmetic issue that I want to address before it turns into something bigger.

See the images for details, but essentially the rear quarters are starting to have some paint chip issues. The entire car has PPF on it except the doors and these rear fenders and as you can see, the fenders are starting to take a beating. The car has been been resprayed in this area before and it looks like it needs it again which leaves me with a couple of questions.

1) Assuming I end up painting the rear fenders to ensure it's all blended in well, what's a fair price for this?
2) Any reason to think there is something more here than just paint that needs to be freshened up?
3) Once it's painted, I'll get PPF on the entire car to protect it. I assume I just need to park it for 30 days to allow the paint to finish curing and then get it wrapped.

Wow, do you live on or travel on gravel roads? That's pretty extreme. You said it's been resprayed before, which makes me question the quality of the job done (and why it was done in the first place). With good prep and good paint it should be practically immune to this happening normal driving conditions.

Yup, that's all the stuff that's been going on through my mind. I have been on some gravel roads, and definitely haven't taken as much care as I evidently need to. I can take the blame for some of this, without doubt.

However, I'm like you and wondering about the quality of the paint that's on there now. It looks great to my eyes but and was certainly done in a paint shop. Was it the most immaculate, perfect job... No, I don't think so. Hence my question, how much work do I put into fixing this?

The thicker the paint the easier it will chip in future, and rocks will always win this argument including factory paint. In your case I would have it repainted but have the old layers of paint striped off first then use quality paint like Glasurit or Spies Hecker (there are others) More important is choosing a shop that does quality work.

WOW how many miles on your car?

I don't even have that many with 128K on the clock.

I'm in a similar situation with a widebody that has 45k on the clock. It's been in Atlanta all is life until now. Do the roads there get salted in winter?

I'm going to pull the factory protective film, correct the paint as best I can, apply a coating then new side guards. I have Agate grey so it's less noticable then on your black paint, but I feel your pain.

Just talked to the local Porsche certified body shop, $8k estimate on repairs. Their concern is that the chips are showing a white primer and that Porsche would not have used that. Hence, it's been done before and apparently not very well. It's approximately 60 hours in labor, $1200 in parts and a few hundred in miscellaneous stuff. And of course there is a disclaimer 'Estimate subject to change with full disassembly.'

It's got 37k miles so far. I have planned on keeping it for several more years and putting quite a few miles on it. I plan to drive this, not look at it. I don't expect perfect from a driven car, but this appears to be a growing problem and something that requires attention.

Is this something that Haggerty's would cover?

How about a sharpie marker to help make them less noticeable until you decide to repaint.

I had 2017 I purchased brand new which looked like that after 17k miles. Looks more rough on black. I'd definitely respray then PPF a larger section.

This is strange because my car was red and as mentioned I was the original owner and it had white specs all over the place like that from stone chips.

This is great to hear. This is the Porsche Certified shop but it appears they are not immune to creating a little FUD.

Black is just a horror showing off every little chip. It’s the last black 911 I will have.

It bugs the crap out of me (on the hood mostly for me) but I’m not considering a respray yet.
