Default New plenum option for 991.2 3.0 motors

Good afternoon! I was looking at plenum options for my 911 carerra t and the usual ones were available (ipd and Tial). Both seem similar features and price (just under $1000). The ipd is very similar to the 991.1 turbo offering and the Tial is unique. I also noticed another offering for the 991.1 turbo from Do88 and figured…if it can work for the 991 turbo and the ipd is similar…why can’t it work here? The Do88 unit is about 1/2 the weight of the ipd, flows better and is 1/2 the price at just over $500. I contacted Do88 and purchased a unit from them to try it out and see. They were willing to see if it would fit and supplied some extra fittings in the event I needed them. I received the unit and installed-a pain in the butt to pull the oem unit but I can say the Do88 fit well! I will document some of the pics and two modifications I made to make it fit properly.

All in, I don’t think the plenum will offer substantial gains-but I plan to put the car on the dyno and see if there is any difference from my last run. Here are some more pics

Stock throttle body lines up (74mm)

The lines don’t…this is where I had to make some adjustments (very simple).

The stock lines don’t have much play and are not very flexible. I ended up getting two 90 degree 1/8npt adaptors from Home Depot and moving one of the ports over to the center. This positioned the lines great and didn’t strain any of the stock lines. I also trimmed one of the couplers about an 1/8 of an inch as it was a little too long and caused issues with the clamp sliding when tightening. This may not be needed but it fit way better after trimming on my application.

Elbows (less than $5 each)

How I assembled them

After that, plug up the lines and install per the instructions included. The factory locator/isolator didn’t fit (was too long). I removed with no issues.

In and tightened up

This isolator/locator would not fit-I left it off and it should have no impact.

Where the isolator went.

Back together.

All in, I would say it was a success-I drove the car for a bit to get gas and there were no issues. No noises, no cel or warning lights, no audible difference, etc. Can’t tell a performance difference from the seat of my pants-but I will verify on the dyno. For
me this is a mod that may show gains when I upgrade to bigger turbos and need more flow.

Going back together

After I showed Do88 the modifications I made for the lines and the isolator being too long, they informed me that the 992 plenum the offer may work better as one line is in the middle already and they provide a shorter isolator. There is a port that needs to be blocked off in the front of the 992 plenum but that can be done with a simple 1/8npt plug. If I had to do it again, I would try the 992 unit.

In forced induction engines, minor intake changes like this have been repeatedly proven to be largely ineffective -- that is, changes are within dyno margins of error. Much easier and much cheaper to just +1.5psi on the boost limit.

I look forward to your dyno tests to see if there are any changes. I hope the Porsche 3.0 is somehow different from my previous experiences!

I’m with you-nothing drastic expected with my current setup but I feel it may be beneficial for the future. We will see how it goes in the future.

You should probably flow bench that unit.
Whats the wall thickness on that SandCast part ?

Flowbench data is here:

https://www.do88.se/en/artiklar/pors...13-plenum.html

Not sure on the thickness but per the site it weighs 1.46 lbs, ipd is 2.49 lbs and stock is .60 lbs

I like that do88 has always provided some level of data. Looks like IPD basically stole the do88 design for the IPD 992 plenum. IPD even got rid of their signature dimples because those were just a gimmick anyway.

Wall thickness.

Cool post. As already stated, the only time this mod has made a statistically relevant improvement has been on cars with much larger, non-stock frame turbos at 800 whp+.

DO88 is a viable, proven alternative for performance parts and many high power builds on the 991 Turbo platform use their equipment. I have a lot of their parts on my car, but chose the IPD plenum instead because the IPD version is.....bigger, and I chose the Champion intercooler kit because it's....fancier. If I had it to do all over again, I would have just bought all DO88 parts for simplicity.
