What was the repair kit you got - I’ve got a very small chip in one of my cars that I want to try a repair on …

For all others, they spec non-OEM glass, and if you want the OEM glass you get to pay the difference between OEM and non-OEM prices. Add in the $500 deductible - because here in the live-free-or-die state you don't get to replace a WS without a deductible - and I'm looking at maybe $400 in savings if I go the insurance route.
So I’m going back a few years now, and I assume the same will still hold true from a Cayenne WS replacement, but…..:

The “Porsche glass” is just the same as the OEM glass with Porsche stamped on it. On the Cayenne I put in a Pilkington replacement which was the exact same part minus the Porsche etching and the $$$ uplift. That is not the same as some no-name Chinese glass.

Worth investigating with a glass specialist (not the big-box guys as they have no clue in general).

So, have been getting WS quotes. My stealership wants $1466.62 for the WS, coming directly from Germany. It would take about a month, but if I want it in 5 days or so, add on another $94. Labor to "install" and recalibrate is $1225. So I asked if they do the install or a third party vendor. They said third party vendor, so do not know why the $1225 in labor costs. I am guessing they are charging $1225 just to recalibrate? Anyway, they also asked if I had a front facing camera, I guess for lane changings. So, about $2785 plus tax.

You cannot get through to any Safelite dealers, so I sent on-line. Cost they quoted is anywhere from $530 to $570.

Have not been able to get in contact with my insurance company, but pretty sure they will laugh at me with the quote from stealership. Crazy difference. I am sure the OEM glass in not that special and anything above what they are will to pay me will have to come out of my pocket.

Find a local specialist. Safelite will be cheap and install Chinese glass. Dealer will order the correct glass and then get safelite to install it.

If you want to spend the time to save the $$$ and get quality glass - I think the local guy is the only way.

So to close the loop on this, I went to stealership and played dumb and asked about WS replacement. I got the same money grabbing rigmarole. So asked if they do the work themselves, to which they said "No" they get a third party glass place to do it. I asked who they use, and they told me. Contracted the glass place directly and they handled everything with the insurance and getting the OEM glass from Germany (took about a week to get). Went there this past weekend and they did a fantastic job. Nice people too. Apparently, the must have disconnected the battery because I had to do a window reset.

PS - went to visit Safelite as I was contemplating who to use. They had a bunch of teenagers working there replacing WS on Toyotas. I said no thanks!

Yes, there are electronics they need to mess with when doing that. You also need the camera calibrated with the new windshield, even if you don't have LKA or anything.

Did mine a few months back. Geico covers OE replacement at no cost in Fl. Most likely won't be the last as these windshields seem to attract road shrapnel.
