Default Heresy!!! 991.1 and 991.2 separate .....

Technical Discussion areas. I would think, based on the "borrowed" info below, that the 991.2 owners and 991.2 fans would want a their separate Technical Discussion areas. The 991.1 and 991.2 cars seem very different to me.......what stands out as the "Elephant in the Room" is the power plant. 3.0 Turbo charged, Carrera and Carrera S. This is a dramatic departure. The available options are much more expansive on the 991.2 compared to its stepbrother, the 991.1.

The 3.4 and 3.8 991.1 N/A motors and their turbocharged cousins are a significant departure from established Porsche tradition. Previously, if you wanted a Turbo, you bought a car labeled as a Turbo. It was a bit deal....Now everyone, 991.2 going forward, gets a Turbo, like it or not.

How far do you want to split things? Coupes from targas and cabros? Center-lock vs 5 lug? PDK vs MT?

I say keep all 991 together. The frequency of daily posting is healthy, but not by much.

I tend to agree with your thinking when it comes to these differences. But, I consider these just "updates".

Look at the 997's. Up until 2008, they had the old port injected engines with IMS failures. After that, they got PDK, direct inject (pretty much the same engine as the 991.1), and no more IMS failures. As well as a slew of updates to the car. So, literally, two different cars...yet they consider them in the same group.

First thing out of the gate, I am just having a little fun here and in then process put together a string topic bringing up a topic that I suspect more than one Reenlisted has wondered about, the technical dissimilarities of the 991.1 and the 991.2, and furthermore that the 991.2 more closely resembles a 992 than the 991.1. But this is just my personal conclusion, not backed up by extensive data other than the HP #s cited below, and available performance data.

I have been on the 991 Forum a short while, joining up earlier this year (2021), as it became clear that a 991.1 was going to be in my garage, I never considered a a 991.2, or a 992 for no logical reason other than I just don't like Turbo vehicles, never have, never will. My prejudice was further confirmed as a result of having a 2017 Lincoln Navigator, a 3.6 L TT V6, With relatively low miles it blew a head headset on a tow, up the "Grapevine". The car was under warranty...the dealership replaced both head gaskets, the bill was close to $10,000 parts and labor. The Tech told me that this was not an uncommon failure. Sure glad to have that FoMoCo warranty, It covered all the cost. This further convinced me that I didn't want a Turbo powered car.

As I began to learn my more and more about 991.1 car, and visited the 991 Forum religiously, I felt that many of the strings in the Forum from 991.2 owners simply didn't apply to my relatively primitive 991.1 NA DPI car. These 991.2 cars seem much more closely related to the 992 than the 991.1 My point, assuming I have one, the 991.1 and 991.2 are significantly different, and in no way comparable the way some would compare a 996 is to a 997, as these cars share very similar power plants, as well as have sometime fatal flaws as seen here: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...a_Problems.htm.. In fact I submit that the the 991.2 and the 992 are very similar. They have essentially the same motor...what defines a car more succinctly than its motor?

When we compare HP a 991.2 and a 991.1, the peak on the left, sans metrics, is a mere perception on my part, representing to me the 991.2 Carrera S significant advancements with its 3.0 Turbo motor, putting out 420 HP. With the displacement 800cc less in the 3.0 991.1 . Compared to the 991.1, the increased "peak" height illustration in the bimodal distribution above, is my perception of the improvements found in the 991.2 over the 991.1, as the result of twin turbocharging and tweeks to the ECU. This performance progression is is further confirmed by the performance of the 992 Carrera S 3.0 L motor, with it delivering 443 HP. As many have suspected, it is not so difficult to squeeze incremental HP out of a Turbo motor. Some would say far easier and significantly less costly.

I rest my case, as flawed as it may be perceived by some to be. And BTW, the 996 and the 997 have their own separate forum, in spite of all they have in common, the IMS bearing failure comes to mind ....these cars are much more similar than the 991.1 and the 991.2, just sayin.....

I think it's better to have one section for both cars, otherwise it gets too segregated. Some topics are applicable to both cars; if one is posting a thread related to a specific version, they just need to put 991.1 or 991.2 in the title. I know I skip over the 991.1 labelled posts.

I know the feeling especially when it came to my daily driver which is why I bought a 2nd generation Acura RDX. The 1st and 3rd are both turbos and that is fine except I keep my cars for well over 10 years (more like 15) and who needs the issues. We have a clown in our local Porsche club that once told me that turbos never fail, I guess that is why you cannot buy replacement turbos. LOL

I agree with you, the 991.2 and 992 are far more similar than the 991.1 and 991.2. But hell, even on the 993 folder and on this one, doesn't it say "Porsche Technical Discussion Areas" and in many cases, they are all but technical. Coming from a 993 which I still have, I don't find many "hands on" types on the 991 forum.

Good to see you here. I take it you still have the 993? Which 991.1 did you buy?

This topic was beat to death a few years ago when the 991.2 came out in 2017. I’ve owned both 991.1’s and 991.2’s. I would keep the sections together. It’s easy enough to figure out if we are talking about different engines. Much of the rest of the car is the same or very similar.

Otherwise, maybe have MT and PDK subsections, perhaps Bose vs Burmester, a subgroup for PDCC, or maybe even a subgroup for those cars equipped with the most important and essential option, Power Steering Plus (PSP).

How are we, somewhat new to the 991 Forum to know this? I did a search and nothing much came up. Post up a link; I'd love to see it?

Let me be as "Snarky" as the wise one, Mr. "Hurricane", and suggest you post ups a comparison sheet and prove to us that the 991.1 and 992.2 are essentially, the same car, well there is that little difference with their respective power plants. And then there is that other little thing, that creating such a table would take some work to do this...that's asking way too much!

In all seriousness, I do wish I had a non-turbo'd 911 sometimes. I actually started looking at 996 cup cars - now that would be a big change!

We may not be brothers but we are at least cousins and we look pretty similar even if we don't accelerate in the same way.

Agreed, if we could all just be sure to put [991.1] or [991.2] in the thread title, that would go along way towards keeping things organized.
