I'm curious, were there any symptoms that prompted you to look for bore scoring, or did you scope it "just because"?

Still, I'll start and drive easy to operating temps based on the consistent feedback here.
Fair enough, I cannot easily find a PDF version of the 991 owners manual. The advice given is not only general and broad for lots of cars (Cartalk advice), but at least one top engine builder I know for 996/997 engine also suggests driving immediately.

Like any good disaster, it’s often multiple factors combined that causes a crisis. Bore scoring probably requires many things to line up: cold climates, hammering the engine when it’s cold, low revs, changes in fuel (fuel formulations that have changed since the original design of the engine), the horizontally-opposed engine layout (and consequently lubrication differences between the banks), and bad luck - all play a part in this drama.

-poor coating / porsche design on 9A1 engines - not a problem on turbo motors

Personally would look at 2.5T Cayman / 718....
wow. This is why internet mechanics should not be listened too. This is pure trash.

(Yes, yes, I did a search of this forum and didn't find anything.)

The price seems right at $60K, but this has got me kind of backed off. The car runs and drives great and I'm concerned but not enough to fully back away.

Is this like a time bomb? What's it cost to drop in a new engine?

Thanks in advance.

Jitters here in the PNW.
I presume you had Juan in Vancouver check this car out for you. He emailed me the photos for a second opinion (as do many other shops we work with) and it was clearly scored. Unless the car is discounted by $20k to cover the cost of replacing the engine, I'd move on and count yourself lucky you chose to do a PPI including scoping the bores.

there was no value to what he said beside maybe these points

-idling / short distance driving combined with prolonged oil change intervals is a recipe for scoring
-not getting the oil / engine hot enough during drives
