Default Is the 911 becoming the new Corvette?

The 911 is becoming the new Corvette. So many pissing wars. For the books the 996 is ****. It’s ugly, it’s unreliable and it’s ****. From the ashes the 997, 991 etc. For the masses no 911 is unique. They made tens of thousands. And the vast majority of automatic - foe the masses.

Sadly, as I track my 911- (so much road rash) I realize how few people with GT3s and better track their cars. These folks who risk road rash in exchange for the experience realize the gain of their wealth and investment. The dudes with Zanoes wax and 10k miles don’t.

It’s totally absurd that anyone asks how many over-revs the computer has registered - what does that matter? Nothing. Zero.

I beat the living **** out of my 991.1 and 997.2 and will do the same on my next.

It’s a car. Insane how such a dominant piece of engineering has become such a corvette.

Jim, I'm happy to answer your question. Please read on...

I was very poor when I was a kid, I was destined to become another statistic. I wanted a Porsche 911 since my early teens. I left a third world country in my early 20's to escape violence and low life, one suitcase and $5k. Awesome Americans gave me a chance (thank you). I became an Engineer and worked my *** off, I am now a VP in a top 10 consulting firm. One day I realized it was time to fulfill my childhood dream so I got a Porsche 911 (twice now).

You may rash the crap out of your Porsche to feel accomplished. I wax mine to feel exactly the same way. To me is a tangible proof of perseverance, hard work and success, it didn't come easy for me. Every time I open my garage and see my accomplishment I look up to the sky and say "You were wrong about me Dad, I made it". I now spend countless amounts of quality time with my son in the garage, we wax and polish and vacuum, and we also chat a lot. One thing I always make sure to say is "Son, one day you will make it".

Hope I answered your question,

Poseur.

P.S. Check out my garage in my profile pic. My 911 and my son's MR2, cannot wait to drive together to car meets!

He's saying Corvettes are cars people buy to "front" in, and that the 911 is following suit... Which is... True, to keep it short. I think the word he's alluding to is "POSEUR".

Obviously if you're on a forum you're most likely the exception, but not always. I agree with all he said. I rash up my cars too, all of them. Push em to the limits. But you can't hate on a man for waxing and buffing his paint. That's therapeutic and puts you in deeper touch with your car. I can easily lose 5-6 hours detailing my car.

The different types of interesting characters I've met in the Porsche world, especially when trying to sell a 911 is unique... 9 out of 10 people don't have a clue as to what the car is about. They're just like "Whoa, 911! So cool! So want!" Every single person was a tire kicker and the only person who was super serious about buying was low balling, refugee style.

The last guy I chatted up at the gas station was rocking a 991 cab. He was on cloud 9, which he should be... It kind of saddened me when he didn't know what motor he had in his car and said "I think it has the LDK transmission".

LDK.

Yes in some ways you’re right. The 991.2 and 992 turbo motors have brought significant gains in tuning and there seems to be an enthusiasm for straight line performance that was never really central to the Carrera mission. Definitely more in a Corvette direction, though not a bad thing per se.

There are plenty of 911 owners that are still true 911 enthusiasts...and if poseurs result in profits that keep Porsche making the 911 then we are all the better for them. Personally I think the dealer network and inflated prices for cars, parts, and servicing are the biggest threats for the true enthusiasts.

Not sure I think the corvette comparison is fair but certainly Ferrari comes to mind. Everyone enjoys these cars differently.

Lots of issues. It takes a lot to not care about condition or value.

I put almost 40k miles on my 981S over 5 years before someone ran into it and crushed it like a beer can on a sunny day. Then I got to get low balled by the insurance company and underpaid on the car.

So yeah. My 991.2 gets less use than I want. It gets rubbed with a microfiber and has agreed value insurance on it.

I now drive a fun, easily replaced or fixed daily driver that soaks up the miles and road rash.

So the point of this thread is to complain about people who don't track their cars?

Personally, I'm all for people not tracking their cars. It's hard enough to get registered in motorsports events in my region anyway and it seems they're getting more crowded every year. I'm all for new people (for sure I'm still new myself), but I also don't like crowds.

Not sure I can relate to the rant on this one... or the weird comparison to the corvette. As others have said, I see nothing wrong in appreciating the beauty of a 911, whether it's tracked or not. And if anything, I see more 'vettes than 911s on the trackdays I've attended. They are more accessible after all.

Corvettes kick the 911's *** on the track. I've had both. Tracked both. The Z06 is a monster on the track, so I wouldn't go spouting off about how superior a 911 is around a track. I do get what you are saying about driving vs waxing, but don't throw all corvettes or corvette owners under the bus.

I own both...911 S cab and a C7 vert. Completely different cars, no real comparison. So I'm a double poseur, right?

Until they go into limp mode or fail. They may be faster on a straight, even on a corner but there is no durability. This is my first hand experience running with them.

My Porsche is the most expensive car I've ever owned. The last thing I want to do (though I would love to take somone else's out!) is damage it in some way on the track. It's just too special to me. Maybe the new hasn't worn off yet? Maybe after some more time with it, I'll find a track and drive it like it was meant to be.
That's the other thing... The closest track to me is 2 1/2 hours away. Not everyone has easy access to stuff like that. Shoot, I don't even have a dealer near me.
But for the record, I felt the same about my C7. It was too perty to get banged up on a track. 🤣. I'm a total POSEUR.
If I was gonna do any tracking, it would be AutoX and I'd buy a beater to do it in.

I've owned Corvettes and I've owned 911s. The 911 is not a Corvette.

Just another guy trying to impart his values on others because that's the way he feels.

Do whatever floats your boat, but don't put others down if they don't share your thinking.
