Default 991.2 Online map updates problem

Hi all, I posted this in the GT3RS forum, but nobody there had the answer. Maybe a kind soul here can help?

All the online Porsche Connect services in my 2019 GT3RS work fine, except map updates. The PCM shows me that there are 2020 updates, lets me select my regions, and start the download. And then nothing happens: the little download symbol appears on the PCM footer, but the download reports 0 B/S and stays there. I've tried it using the embedded SIM internet connection, including driving to a strong signal area. I've also turned off the PCM 'phone, which allows me to use my home wifi instead.

I called Porsche Support and they sent me an email suggesting that I hard reset the PCM and do a Vehicle Handover. The problem is that the hard reset procedure is for an older/different PCM, involving holding down the INFO button for 10 seconds. The 991.2 GT3RS doesn't have an INFO button. All my online searches for PCM reset describe the INFO button. I tried holding down various other buttons; nada. I did the Vehicle Handover anyway, with no result.

Any ideas please? Many thanks!

I have the same issue here in Switzerland (with my 991.2 gts). 2 maps are available but will just not d/l and install. Otherwise eveything works fine with the PCM (bar google earth ofc) Connect functions... Read somewhere this is a known issue (at least the google part) and would be sorted by Feb 2021...

Best is not to use online updates.
Oflline safer and better way,and also your license for updates might be expired.
NAR newest maps are 2020/2021.
EU are 2021.
If you want to know more PM me.

Thank you. I've had multiple emails and calls with Porsche support. It's been a little frustrating because I sent them full details of the issue, with photos of PCM screens at the beginning, and subsequent interactions have them asking for all the same information piece by piece. However, the last communication, while somewhat inscrutable, implied that it was a known problem that they're working on.

Thanks for your reply. I subscribed (and paid for) a year of Porsche Connect services, and they're current through the end of 2021, including online map updates. Per my reply above, they seem to know that it's an issue and are working on it. I could request an offline update, and will, if this problem isn't resolved soon. My North America maps are 2018-2019 and the online system in the PCM confirms that new maps are downloadable. But when I start the download it never gets beyond 0%, on LTE or wifi connection.

I've had variants of Porsche online services in several cars now, and they've been mostly overcomplicated and/or flaky. The exception is my 2020 Taycan, where everything works like it should, with only one app, and no messing around.

Thanks for your reply...

I did not know you could update maps (i.e. as an end user) via the SD option but only via the online service. I have the Porsche connect included until June 2022 so not worried about the update license expiring - just annoyed it’s not working :-)

My Volvo XC60 has lifetime map updates included and can be done either via 4G or d/l via their website and then import/upload through a USB dongle which is much handier than the PCM 4.0 setup...

Going to PM you for more info...

Porsche Connect license is not equal to maps license.
It is limited to 5 free updates or 2-1/2 years.
For example if you car is 2016,you can update to 2018-2019 map package.

And as I see from your signatures, you most likely have free map updates expired.

Well i can send you an offline update to try.
If it wont install, you have expired license.

If that is the case it can be extended

At least in the US, Porsche Connect services are a subscription service, with one or more years free with the purchase of a new car. This is distinct from the Porsche Car Connect service that's also free for a year and adds a little more functionality through the separate Car Connect app, e.g. unlocking doors via the app. This Porsche Connect and Porsche Car Connect stuff is just nuts, and it seems to have disappeared at least for the Taycan in 2020, which just has Porsche Connect.

The Porsche owner web site is very clear that one of the Porsche Connect services is the ability to download online map updates (with a hard-to-discern annual limit). I've used that service successfully with a prior 2019 Panamera Turbo. You check for updates (or the car tells you that updates are available), select the region(s) you want, and a gigabyte or so of data downloads to the car. It just doesn't work on my 2019 GT3RS. The attached photo of the subscriptions screen in the PCM confirms that my update service is current. The system offers me 2020/21 updates, I select them, it asks me to start the download, and that's where everything stops..

My Taycan has downloaded several updates automatically in the 9 months that I've owned it. It's a very different version of PCM, though.

And, in any case, a 2019 GT3RS should have access to 2020/2021 maps.

PCM5 and PCM4 can't be compared.
If you wish,I can send you latest offline package to try it.
Full maps are 13gb's so need atleast 16gb sd card.

Thank you, that's very nice of you. I'll hold off for a while in the hope that Porsche fixes the issue. It's clearly something broken just at the point of download. My guess is a broken link or authentication issue at the server. The process only fails at the last step, i.e. the actual download when I select "Start". See photos please.

My car (991.2 T) won’t pull OTA map updates at all. I’m running 2018/2019 maps and when I check it says no update found. I have Connect subscribed til 11/2021 and the other “features” (News, weather, traffic) work just fine.

is there a way to download the map files via computer? I have plenty of SD cards/flash drives with capacity.

also....does it really try to download 10+ GB over LTE? I feel like that would take a week to download

No,they update just the region you are in right now.
OTA never updates full maps.
So thats why offline update is the real deal.

If you have map license, you can use 2021 maps.
If not they will just fail to install.
License can be extended of course.

So this seems to be a problem that at least a few of us are having. My last email from Porsche suggested that they were working on a fix, and that it was a systemic issue.
