Default Title mistake - odometer exceeds mechanical limit

Hi guys,

I found out a stupid mistake i made recently.

I got a 911 from a private sale with 30k miles. I accidentally checked the box on the title saying odometer exceeds mechanical limits. Now my Carfax is screwed. I went back to the DMV and they refused tor ever tit since i was the one who made the mistake and i was asked to submit a mail to the database unit for correction. This is for the state of NJ. Just wondering if anyone had any success dealing with it? I think this will drastically hurt my resale value.

appreciate any insight.

oh damn good luck man. never heard of that happening but i guarantee that will hurt resale value if it's not corrected. mileage tampering is basically vehicle credibility down the trash

Do what they said -- send the mail.

Should be a relatively painless process, although a bit lengthy.

Although not exactly the same scenario, I ended up opening an insurance claim on my car when I hit an unmarked construction dip in the road they had just dug at night...sounded bad when it happened. Of course I wanted the insurance company to hold the city accountable so I immediately opened a claim. The next day when I was able to inspect it I had only scraped PPF on the front bumper spoiler. Can’t seem to get the “accident” removed. There was no payout or anything and is clearly stated but regardless very frustrating with these forever reports especially if they don’t reflect the reality.

definitely wishing you luck fixing the paperwork!

Carfax isn't going to help at this point, NJ mandarins will have to make the correction. Then you can fight with CarFax.

Oh man, sure going to burn some time - I feel your pain.

get ready for some grief. this will all come down to your particular state and how difficult they choose to make things. you will need a new corrected title. here in IL, your situation would be a nightmare. this is way more difficult then just a Carfax correction. you'll get to deal with that part AFTER getting your title corrected/new one generated. the government is involved in this first step. hope NJ doesn't make it a months long ordeal like IL would.

i agree with "do whatever they tell you you to do" and do it right away. it will destroy your resale value if left uncorrected. if all NJ wants is a letter to correct it, god bless them!

good luck

Although, think it will be easy with service records and age of car to prove you haven’t rolled 1,000,000 miles.

you would think and hope so. agree 100%. should be obvious. a friend of mine did the exact same thing about 10 years ago in Chicago (on an audi A5). he ended up needing a notarized letter from the seller among other flaming hoops/forms the state made him submit. took several months.... but that was IL. lots of things can be that way here, especially in the city/Chicago. the Carfax part wasn't bad once he had the new/corrected title and Carfax re-verified it through the state database.

hope it goes smoothly but be prepared if it doesn't

thanks all for all the replies and ideas.

After some google search, yes looks like they would need notarized letter from both the seller and me (private sale) stating the odometer is correct and the checkbox was my mistake...

now my biggest trouble is i can't get a hold of anyone by calling the dmv number so i don't know exactly what docs they need... sigh

they corrected the title, took about 6 month. I had to mail in my title, with a letter of explanation of the mistake, a check for 60$ and some pictures of my odometer. Call DMV and they will give you instructions.

That's a feature I used a lot of my oldies with 5 digit odometers... On a modern car I would think it's easy to show that's a mistake since there are 6 digits and you aren't in any magazine as the first million miles 991.
I mean, show them you are still on the original water pump and that your door panels aren't warped, and they'll know for sure it's not 1 million + whatever miles ;-) LOL.
