Three Wheelin'
It's all about personal preference. For me, I thoroughly enjoy the .2 power and sense of speed, and I still enjoy the sound of the engine. I have PSE though, I can't speak to non-PSE but I'm curious about the sharkwerks.
For my money, knowing I wouldn't be using it as a daily commuter- I'd probably go 997.2, assuming they're still falling somewhere in the 60-70k range for ultra-clean examples. But if I'd be spending any significant time in the car other than pure "fun" time? 991.2 all the way.

I just went through this same exercise and ended up with 991.2 T.
I test drove 991.1 GTS, 991.2 base and 991.2 S.
To me the T is a special model that is just right. It gives you that extra noise from engine/exhaust due to less sound deadening and comes with PSE and Sport PASM. Mine also has the T interior pack with full leather. Just makes it very special car to drive compared to regular base or S models.
The 991.1 GTS i drove was amazing but prices on them are high if CPO and warranty is shorter compared what u can still get on 991.2.
I never really considered 997.

Not sure if 997.2’s have the same issue, but as you can see on the 1st page of this 991 section, there are way too many 991.1/.2 folks with water pump failures and overheating, me recently included.
If I did more research, I MAY have actually kept my old 718 GTS or moved onto the new GT4, as you don’t hear much failures with those on the forums; at least not as much as the 991’s.
I still absolutely love my 991.2 GTS though and try to find every excuse to drive it. I have my fingers crossed that after the water pump and valve blocks are fixed, it’ll stay solid, as it is the best car I’ve ever owned.

997 vs 991
I went through the same decision this year as well with about the same budget. 997 vs 991.1 vs 991.2. I went with a 991.2 S. This is my first 911 and have totally bought into the newer turbo charged 3.0 liter design. So much torque is produced at low rpm it was a no brainer for me. Plus with the newer design you get back-up camera, parking sensors etc. If your worried about the anemic exhaust sound go to the Soul exhaust website and watch the video of the 991.2 demo. I had also been told to get the newest version you can afford, but didn’t want a 992.

Dont let the water pump failures scare you. Just get a car with warranty/cpo coverage. I came from a gt4 to a 911.2 carerra t and what scares me most about the gt4 was the strut tower failures (not covered under warranty) and the third gear failures (more than likely covered but if it fails outside of warranty-yikes).

The 3rd gear they fixed on the 718 (at least later productions) with heat shrinked or fully welded gear-spline vs spot welded.
Not sure about the strut tower. But haven’t heard of any failures on 718, just 981 GT4’s.

991.1 c2s or GTS
With pse is what you are looking for. With your budget you may even be able to stretch to a gts or s with powerkit. The turbo is always gonna sound like a turbo. You said burble at any speed and they dont have that. Remember newer is better in relation to maintenance and the 997 interior just misses the mark. Buy a MT as a keeper.

With 80K you are in a 2016 S/4S easily. Last year of bullet proof .1 production, NA howl.
My choice would be what I will be driving in about 30 mins time - 2016 C4S NA MT PSE. Ticks every box.

[QUOTE=dallasporsche911;17025286]I am dealing with analysis paralysis. I purchased a 2019 Porsche Macan in March and now I want to fulfill my dream of owning a 911. I decided I am comfortable with spending up to $80K on the car. I am not a Porsche purist, however, I have always been in love with Porsche design and the 911 has been a dream car. As a result of not being biased about NA or turbo 911 and not planning on doing overly spirited driving and also gravitating towards newer and more comfortable as opposed to "analog," what would some of you gravitate towards if you had a similar budget? I was thinking of maybe getting a 997.2 as those appear to have bottomed out depreciation-wise and I will likely be putting less than 4K miles per year. I plan on keeping the car for many years and I don't suffer from new toy syndrome (I am pretty reserved and conservative on most levels). Should I go with the money saving 997.2 option but dated interior, or go with a late model 991 instead and enjoy the creature comforts of a newer car? One thing I do want above all else is to hear a throaty sound from the exhaust when I drive the car, even in normal driving conditions. If I can get that from an exhaust upgrade on a base 991 Carrera (I don't believe you can get that sound stock) then I could just settle this issue and go that route. One last thing...a manual transmission is a must. Thoughts on this would be appreciated.[/QUOTE
Aftermarket exhaust on the 991.2 sounds great. I went with Soul and couldn’t be happier.
Porsche purists are slow, not the Porsche’s they drive.

I'm in a similar situation, I think a 991.1 GTS would be your best option. That, or a 997.2 GT3. Those two cars are what I'm currently looking for, just having a hard time finding one at a good price, lol.

Advanced
Helpful guidance provided above. In the same position as well, and after testing a 991.2 base and 991.1 GTS, leaning towards the GTS. The .2 sure seemed to pull harder down low, but the GTS is just differentiated from the rest of the non-GT models (in my opinion), with great specs while also allowing for it to be used as a daily. Haven't tried out the 991.2 S, but the thought of the NA engine is what is drawing me (that and I've found a pretty good deal on a 1-owner CPO car with everything checking out). However, curious what this thread is all about as I'm about to finalize a purchase... https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1222...-chrono-2.html

i was in the same boat last February and went with a CPO 2016 991S with 8,000 miles. No regrets
