What would you do with $80K (911 purchase)

I am completely biased, but I would agree that the 991.1 GTS is the way to go in that price range, if you can find one to your liking. It is the last and most powerful of the naturally aspirated Carreras. It is a fantastic daily driver and weekend canyon carver. A real Swiss Army Knife of a car. My GTS has gotten a lot of curb time lately as I have a 991.2 Touring but I will never, ever get tired of dropping the top of my GTS cab and hearing the spectacular whirr of that 3.8 L flat six engine. For as orgasmic as the GT3 engine is, I must say that the 991.1 GTS's engine is particularly intoxicating in cab form. The sound, the smell, the overall magnificence of the engine with the top-down driving experience cannot be matched by the GT3 which is, by most but not all means, the far superior car.

I think the primary questions would be manual or PDK. It really changes the available options. The second question is the .2 turbo or .1 naturally aspirated. They sound different and as someone else stated, drive different. The next question is PSE vs. Non-PSE and aftermarket exhaust. Then sport chrono - more significant in a manual due to auto-blip/rev match in sport plus.
Good luck in your search.
Shameless plug, I am selling my 14 C4S. I do intend to trade it in for a .2 GT3 but will sell if a deal can be made to sell it.

I can appreciate what you are saying, but it is not what I am looking for. I am gravitating towards comfort over performance, not the other way around. As far as the investment side of the equation, I think you are 100% right - this car will only appreciate in value, but I tend to compartmentalize my investments from my enjoyment pursuits otherwise I can make questionable decisions (like buying vacation property that does not make sense just because I like the destination). That said, thank you for your thoughts.

So far as I can tell your priorities are sound, manual, as analog as possible, comfort, depreciation. Given all that, the only thing that checks all those boxes is the 997.2. With that budget you can buy an S, but not a turbo (since you want manual, a PDK can be had in that range). The interior on the 997.2 is better tech-wise than the 997.1 so at least you'll have that going for you.
991.1 or 991.2 are both still depreciating and the sound of the 991.2 is just not what you're looking for it sounds like. Even with aftermarket exhaust, if that sound is very important, I think you'd be disappointed. The 991s have better interiors but for a car you'll drive 4k miles a year and are looking to keep for a while, I wouldn't choose the 991 simply for the interior. I love my 991 but if the interior was the only reason it was "better" to me, I wouldn't have purchased it over a 997.
FWIW, I also don't know what you mean by "analog" since compared to a 964 or a G-body, a 997 is very much NOT an analog car. So you'll have to decide where on that vague spectrum you really enjoy the drive and go with it.

Go drive a few of them, we will all have opinions but only you will know what’s right for you, I have a C2 with PDK , SC, and PSE, love the car, and I love the low end torque, it just pulls so hard around town. I drove the 991.1 also there is more sound, not that the .2 sounds bad, just different, but I liked the changes on the .2 inside and out and love the torque. Either way you will love it.

My SIX vehicles are worth about $100k combined (net $75k w/a $25k loan outstanding). This includes a:
1) 2000 C4 Cab
2) 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder
3) 2002 Ford F250 7.3L Diesel 4x4 Longbed Lariat Supercab
4) 2008 BMW 335i E90 Sedan
5) 2012 MB ML350 4Matic SUV
6) 2014 Chevy Corvette Stringray Z51 3LT 7Mt
This was $ well spent in my opinion but $80k on a single car is just a waste of $ IMO.

Drive every model and year you possibly can then decide the the "one" you like best. Next, find the car with EVERY OPTION you want in the best condition possible. Period.
Don't let a few more (thousand) miles scare you, but buy the whole car.
It may take more time than you want, but you will find the more time you spend to find the perfect car . . . the more "prefect" cars are coming within you budget.
Do not be impatient and do not settle on a car you are not "In Love" with and do not loose a car for "a few grand more" than your budget if it checks all the boxes.
They always cost more than your budget.. Just like most pleasures in life, when you spend a little more, you'll find they will make you much more happy.
Besides, eighty grand will buy you exactly what you want, but you already know you'll spend 85, or 90 . . . and don't worry about the tax that doesn't count in the budget. It's tax. . . .
