Today while driving my 991.2 the car overheated. It got up to 250 degrees and instructed me to pull over. I was about 3 miles away from home when this occurred and had to pull over 5 times to get it home. The car has about 17k miles and I hadn't driven it in almost a week. Has anyone experienced this, or knows possible causes? thanks

Failing water pump or Change Over Valve.

You got the car home? After the temp cools down to 140F you can unscrew the coolant cap and check the coolant level.
You can peak under the car and see if you have any crusty coolant or active coolant leaks.

Thank you both, I did get the car home but will not be able to tend to it until Monday as I am headed out of town as I type. When I get back I will check and report back. Again, thank you both.

Sounds likely that the water pump is failing and leaking coolant, seems to be slightly a common occurrence on a subset of 991.2's. My 997.2 was low on coolant and I believe the computer automatically "overheats" the gauge and instructs you to pull over to save the engine.

True, especially the 2017s, and some early 2018s...several threads in this forum about the problems.

I am getting the car towed today, the service adviser suggested it may be the water pump too. They won't be able to actually work on the car until the 30th, but I will keep you updated. Thank you all for the replies.

Yes, I do. It was crazy because they told me they wouldn't get to it until the 30th, but Jose got it in. Spoke to him today and they should have it ready next week. They couldn't even offer a loaner.

i heard the same BS, rented a car and cost me over $300, all the rentals at enterprise are smokers cars,,,gag me..i checked my coolant the day after picking up and had to add 2 cups coolant,,now it reads perfect

Yes, I am not a fan of niello, thats why I take my business to SoCal. Fortunately I have a great relationship with a person down south. For service you are kind of stuck though.

This is probably because the shop did not get all the air out during the bleed following refill of the coolant. Maybe they did not bleed correctly or did it in a hurry. Had my water pump replaced as well and had to add some coolant a few hundred miles later (read full after leaving shop). Now my level is stable and does not change.
