Default Oil change at Dealership, felt ripped off!!

I took my car 14 991.1 c4s to the dealer on Friday to take care WLA4 & WLC8 campaign.
I told them I brought oem engine filter and asked the SA if they can put the engine air filter in since the rear bumper needs to be removed. He said no problem.

He was willing to help, I told him let's do the oil change together since my car is there.

I received the invoice today and the oil change price is $568 (labor $367 & parts $200) as shown on the invoice.

I felt they overcharged for the oil change service then I called service dept to get quote for oil change and was told $495 for my car.

I will pick up my car tomorrow and I am not sure if I should make him revise the invoice to $495 or just let it go since they put the filter in. I understand the difference isn't a lot but I think if they want to charge more for putting in the filter, they need to let me know ahead of time. Did I get ripped off?

What would you do?

Of course you feel ripped off. How are you supposed to feel if you are going to the dealership? They quoted me $400 for a LOF with the service campaign which is about twice what my indy charges and I said no way. What did they quote you for the engine air filter? I think they quoted me $1000 to take the bumper cover off and change it

Did you get a quote for the $495 before, or after, the service was completed?

If it was before, then yes, they should have contacted you that the initial estimate would be revised higher.

But if not, then all you did was essentially give them a blank check to charge you whatever they wanted.

Nevertheless, when you go to pay, I would bring up the difference - calmly - and say "Is this total correct? Shouldn't it be $495?" If you still aren't satisfied after his explanation, you can ding them on the after-service survey - Porsche takes those very seriously.

And on a side note, $495 is a ridiculous price for an oil change. If it were my car I would find a good indy.

a good Indy does it for around 200-250 here in San Francisco (expensive labor market)

I do it myself at home for $100 for the oil change kit from FCP Euro that includes oil, filter and even a new drain plug and crush washer etc.

It takes 1 hour and 45 mins of that 1 hour is waiting on the all the oil to drain.

I can even send my old oil back to FCP for 100% refund LOL no joke. Once you buy a kit, keep sending back your oil and filter and they credit back your kit.

Understood, one bad experience can make the stealership name stick!

I have 2 dealers I use. One quoted me $500 for an oil change on my .2. I looked online and found a coupon from a third dealer for $285 and my #2 dealer matched it. I’m within 60-90 minutes of 4 dealers.
Have all the tools. Doing it myself from now on and saving receipts. Walmart sells the 5 quart jug of Mobil One 0W-40 for $23. So under $100 all in seems about right.

When I lived in Pa I used to buy the oil, filter , plug and O ring and the dealer did the change for me under $200.
Car is in Florida and found two great shops as the dealer there charges $249 per hour labor with an inexperienced tech team, delusional. Just got a change in June $100 with me bringing the goods. I don't have a good set up to do my self but this is at least fair. Dealer is insane. I didn't even ask them what it would cost but at $249/ hr I'm guessing $500+. No thanks.

I have a local independent and a guy there has 3 M cars himself. Half the cost and the work done by a guy that cares. Find something like that where you are.

You can stop feeling that you were ripped off. I can confirm it for you.

I just can't figure out the game here. I've owned a 991 since 2013 and am continued to be puzzled when it comes to the dealers' charges for routine oil changes. It's a perfect opportunity to get a customer back in the shop to look around at the new cars as well as time for the tech to look for problems or head off problems in the car being serviced. We have a Subaru Outback. Oil change is $67 - all in at the dealer. I can't tell you how many letters and emails I've received "reminding" me that my rear brake pads are worn. There's nothing special about a porsche oil change; I've performed the service myself many times

I'll try and be neutral, since you asked for help.

I think your decision whether or not to pay the bill as is depends on your clarifying this statement:

I called service dept to get quote for oil change and was told $495 for my car.

Either one of two things happened. At the time you dropped off the car with the service writer did you have an opportunity to receive an estimate of the service? Was that estimate $495? Did you sign off on a form with this number? If you did, I think you have every right to ask for the service cost to be adjusted downwards.

On the other hand, if you have only your word you "called the service dept", then the cashier closing out the service record has no record or documentation to support your claim. You are basically bringing in a completely unverifiable conversation, which is verbal only, on your say so, of the cost of the service. There's no way for the cashier or service manager to verify it. Its basically your word. As the business owner, the dealership can't operate that way.

So, which was it? Pre-agreed price at time of drop off, or a verbal conversation you want to assert after the fact? IMHO, only one of those (pre-agreement on price) is a valid argument.

As to the cost of the oil change itself, in either case, $495 or $588, the guys in the posts above have covered lower-cost options including DIY, indy, or another dealer, so no need to belabor that.

HOLY COW

I have lived in three states in the last 6 years I HAVE NEVER paid that much for an oil change.
Every Porsche Dealership I have been to charged between 230 - 300 for an oil change
Sunset Porsche Portland was $280 for PCA member
Porsche Oklahoma city was $238 for PCA member
Porsche St Louis $288 Oil Change with PCA track inspection (which they do a detailed job of)
Porsche St Louis ( I just had mine done in Jan this year ) 1,8XX.XX change for spark plugs , air filter, oil change, brake fluid flush, and track inspection (PCA member)

You GOT RIPPED OFF HARD!! STOLEN.... TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS.... OUCH!
Where are you guys finding these stealerships???

the vast majority of dealers over charge for oil changes and anything else

your mistake was assuming they would do anything to your car for free, they are not in that business

That is STEEP! I just looked up and my last oil change at the dealer in March was $289.40. Also, I did my 40,000 service about a year before and paid $968.96. I have seen people being quoted thousands for that!

Ouch, that's pricey for an oil change. I've gotten it done at a local independent shop for ~$150 with all materials included.

On another note, why is labor so much. Shouldn't have taken more than 1 hour to do right?
