I've been reading (with great interest) everything in this forum for a while, and it was very helpful as I started searching for my C2 the past few months. My Porsche fixation started early, as my dad has always loved cars—and bought and sold them frequently—and it's been our 'thing' ever since I can remember. (This expensive affliction has been lifelong, and I even work as an automotive marketing consultant now.) He had several 911s in the late 70s/early 80s, and though I was just a few years old, I have distinct recollections of the details—the smell of the leather, the round door-lock switch, the diagonal stitching on the door panels. When I was in high school, he had a 964 cab (tiptronic) and then the one I really loved—a Baltic blue on white 964. He was kind enough to let me drive them, even when I was newly licensed.
Over the years, I had a Cayenne S when they first came out, and a former husband who had a 997... but between my search & rescue and mountain biking hobbies, and having big dogs, I stuck with SUVs and never thought much about a Carrera of my own. Then, in the last few months—while I waited for a Land Rover I'd ordered—I thought 'hell, the world may be ending. Buy the 911.' So I started looking. It had to be a manual... despite the engineering marvel that PDK is, and its performance superiorities, I've always bought MTs in every car I could (which has been impossible for most of them in the last 15 years). That of course made my search a little harder, but I did find a few candidates. One that stood out was in North Carolina (I'm in SF Bay Area). Basalt black/black, MT, SC, ventilated seats, Bose, minimal other options, and Guards red gauges and seatbelts. I really liked the red accents to add a little understated flair. The car was very clean, just under 40k miles, one owner, and the (Porsche) dealer was wonderful from first contact. I had a fantastic shop (owned by a very thorough and highly-recommended PCAer) do a PPI.
They shipped it out and I got it about 3 weeks ago, and I've been in love ever since. I've been reading up on all the detailing tips (I've always loved doing that stuff, but this is the first black car I've owned, so next level!) Want to add a numeric shifter in the short term, ceramic coating, and eventually maybe the Musicar tweeter upgrade. My 50+ lb pit bull has acclimated to the backseat (she curls up and lays her head on the tranny hump/front armrest). Oh, and I did the requisite turn indicator swap to clear LEDs immediately after delivery. I've been around here long enough to know—that's the law.
Hope to meet some of you who are in the Bay Area at some future events when we get back to more normal times!
Congratulations! Beautiful car. I completely understand how you feel about having an MT, I went through the same challenging search for the past few months. For me this car is about the driving experience rather than the numbers - I just came from a Tesla Model S P90D - and so I don't care at all about how quick/slow my car is compared to one with PDK, I just enjoy the heck out of every moment driving it. Have a great time with it and stay safe, things are a little crazy out there in CA right now!
Just made the same mental calculation myself and stopped shopping and waiting and bought. Congrats! Also considering numeric as well as the tweeters, but still thinking about doing a cheaper DIY tweeter solution instead. (Although to be honest, the Bose in my car is....fine. Not great but fine.)
Great story, and congrats! And love that throwback picture!
Also, as another fellow mountain biker, you can combine your 911 and mtb hobbies easily. I throw my Rocky Mountain instinct on top of my 911 all the time. The stock 991 roof rack is rock solid. You don’t even need the SUV to go ride!
