Default Vario Cam Solenoid a wear item?

Just had two replaced on my 2012.5 C2 with PDK at 95000 miles. This was the first extraordinary service on the car. To date, nothing else has failed.
The car stored a P1382 code as well as misfire and improbably torque codes (whatever that was). The stealershp overcharged me for the parts but the car now performs like new.

Over the past 15000 I have noticed that the idle was not always even and the mileage decreased from a 25.6 mpg level to just over 20 mpg. On prolonged highway it rarely rose above 30 mpg wherein the past 35-37 mpg was obtained at speeds as great as 80mph.

I regularly change the oil at 5k intervals and have the other routine maintenance performed. The engine consumes no oil (that is detectable) between changes. I use mobil 0-40.

With the new vario cam solenoids in place the car is now consuming 27-30 mpg and idling and accelerating like a new car.

Does anyone know if the solenoids are intended to be a lifetime car part?
If not, do you think they should be replaced at set intervals?

Do you mind posting up the part numbers that were replaced?

I'd be interested to see if replacing this solenoid specifically helped address the engine stumble issue. Looks like the car needs 2 of them? Based on where it's located (11 on the diagram), they look like a PITA to swap out.

Did it throw a check engine light? Or just the codes when you pulled it on a scanner?

it originally just hampered performance and mileage. I thought that the injectors were dirty. When it hesitated and stumbled on acceleration I started to drive it hard and only then did it throw a code.

The stumbling issue occurs at higher revs.....for this problem the car only was smooth at rpm greater than 2500

Yes a complete PITA two swap them out and that is why I overpaid at the stealership

Only one failed but I figured it was only a matter of time before the other one dropped dead

The access to the sensor looks relatively easy. I just did my plugs and coilpacks, I think with heat shields removed and a universal joint, it should be doable. I would need to get under the car and take a look to confirm.

You can actually hear the solenoids working around 3000 rpm. The exhaust tone changes and gets louder if you have an exhaust on your car. The cam switches to a high rpm lobe.

This might be something to replace at 80-90k miles. It's on my list, I would rather be proactive especially with something that relatively inexpensive on these cars. From the diagrams it appears to be that rubber boot to the right of the lit up coilpack.

Looks easy enough to swap in our cars

Do you mind sharing what you ended up paying the Stealer to get this done?

$970.41 which includes their overcharge for the parts..$210 each when it is available from Porsche dealers online at $150 each - there's an overcharge of at least $120.

https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...id-9a110530803

Includes a $101.72 PCA discount.

I figured it would be about $1200, just because it's a dealer....was somewhat surprised that I was not excessively overcharged.

Probably was overcharged about $150-$300 but, I didn't have to do it myself, they have overhead and they should earn a profit and they delivered the car to my home during my work day

Wow! I was definitely expecting more than that. Sounds well worth it!

Can you clarify on this? You have a "stumbler" and this repair didn't make the stumble go away?

I had to change these out in mine, basicly same as changing a coil pack. Note that new screws are needed.

Awesome thanks for the info, is it in fact that rubber boot between the rear most coilpack and middle one?
