Default Is this normal tire wear in the rear?

I took my Carrera T in for it's first service today and the service advisor sent me these pictures of my rear tires (Michelin Pilot Sport 4S). The car has 9100 miles on it. Both tires have a thin strip worn down to the tire cord on the inside portion of the tire. The outside portion of the tire appears to have normal wear for 9100 miles. The service advisor says this is normal, but they need to be replaced, which I am doing. Have any of you experienced the same thing? The front tires still look good around with plenty of life left. I am the second owner and have not tracked the car (yet). The first owner reportedly did not track the car either.

Seems like you may have a lot of negative camber? I personally wouldn't expect that (but I'm no tire expert) - previously I destroyed the outside of my tires because of not enough negative camber, but that is more track-specific. Even with as much negative camber as I can get without camber plates, I don't see that kind of inside wear. Since you're not tracking it, and the previous owner wasn't tracking it, you shouldn't need as much negative camber as you would want for aggressive track use. I'd ask them to check your alignment and camber settings. That said, 9,000 miles on MPS4S isn't terrible even though Michelin claims you can get more from them.

Seems like you need to hit some twisties harder...safely of course. Fronts the same age without the cording?

It's very difficult to tell from a photograph or at least these photographs. But it looks to me much more like a tires are rubbing on something. That does not look like tire wear. Have you heard anything like that while driving?

I would have all the rear control arms and all assorted bushings checked.

Yes, the fronts are the same age without the cording, and have relatively little wear overall. As far as I know, the car still has the factory set-up, so I'm not sure why there would be so much negative camber. I haven't noticed any rubbing noises while driving.

My first impression as well. That does not look like “wear” from aggressive camber to me.

Does your car have Rear Axle Steering, or do you have lowering springs?

I just changed the rears on my 991.2CS on Monday with RAS and 8900 miles. Similar looking wear. My tire shop mentioned generally that high torque cars like 911s have a 3 to 1 rear to front replacement ratio. My fronts still look great.

I do have RAS and the car is completely stock as far as I am aware. I'll ask the dealer to look for any non-stock items. Thanks for the pic risotto, that does look similar to my wear. I'll have the dealership save my old tires so that I can take better pictures.

Toe settings wear tire faster then high camber angle. Get an alignment and ask for 1deg camber in front, zero toe, 0.5 camber in rear and 0.1 toe out in rear

dealers don’t do realignment at delivery. Too much toe scrubs tire. Like walking pigeon toe down a concrete road, your shoes wouldn’t last long.

I'm guessing excessive toe.

Yes, normal for a 911. 10K miles is average for rears, I get twice that out of the fronts.
