Hello Rennlisters:
My good friend had his 2015 Targa stolen sometime in the last 24 hours. I was asked not to provide any specifics yet, but wondering what anti-theft/tracking options are available on this generation. The thieves appear to have the keys. two other cars were also stolen from his garage (BMW & RR too). It's a black on black Targa with less than 4K miles near Santa Barbra. Thanks

Does he have porsche connect still active? It can trace where it is. My guess is likely in a container headed for E. Europe or Africa.

I am trying to figure that out now. Is this a subscription? We found the app and are registering now. Is it a subscription? He recently bought the car from a friend so we are trying to contact him too

It is but I bet you could call Porsche NA to tell them your issue and have it turned on. I have no subscription but the connect app (not car connect) still gave me my car location.

Thanks everyone. No good news on the car yet. It was a 7 speed/3 pedal car. We called Porsche NA, they were very helpful, but were not able active Porshe connect. They also could not verify it was an option on that car. He drove it twice before it was stolen. One of the drives was cross country tho!

Experienced car thieves will cool off stolen cars, park and surveil them for a time before moving them more aggressively.
Lacking a tracker and the thieves possessing the keys aren't going to help the recovery. Some cars do end up in a container, many ports now have scanners that can examine an entire container so there is some deterrence.
That doesn't prevent the car ending up in a chop shop where it's parted out. Nowadays, it's not easy to do a re-VIN because ID numbers are everywhere on a car and tampering with them can be detected if you know what to look for.
Car thievery from dealers, rental companies and anywhere cars/equipment are concentrated is common. Key control measures are critical. Many heavy equipment operators place trackers on their equipment as a standard.
The Porsche Connect app isn't the greatest, but the ability to track the car is the main reason to keep subscribed.

Crazy Update: The car was recovered. It was found 30 miles away in a very nice neighborhood. It was parked in the driveway of a very nice house, whose owners live there part-time and were not in at the time. The car was detailed, and the tank was filled. The key was missing so it was towed to the dealer. The DME looks great. too bad they did not put some new tires on!! more details to come!
