The SmartTop addition is awesome! I got one for my targa.... it allows me to open the roof remotely, like the European spec'd cars. It was definitely worth the ~$450 to me. lots of goodies that you can configure.

Once in a while you can find a used one, which is sold by one who has sold their car - I paid $300 for mine on fleaBay.

Yes, in North America we have to pay 439$ for what European cars have for free thanks to us regulations (about frequencies or waves…)

For what it is worth the SmartTop module does several other things that not even the Euro cars can do.
