Default BATTERY QUESTION

Hello! I have a 2015 GTS cab 12,000 miles. The original battery passed a multipoint inspection recently but, I noticed I am running at 14 volts while driving. Is this normal? It seems to be at the high end of the gauge. Also, I called around for battery replacement prices and found one at a Pcar dealership for 40% off list for a new OEM. However, I was informed that I need to pay $250 to have the car programed for the new battery! Is this true? Please provide me your wise council!

What outside temps are you driving in. I have a brand new battery in and I can se high 14’s in colder temps here in CT.

As for the programming, there are differing opinions, Most say it’s a money grab. Dealer will tell you it slightly changes the cars charging techniques as those are different for an old battery vs new battery... and will help to get the most out of your new battery. Is it worth $250.... not likely.

Thank you for the thoughts! I am in CA and mostly driving in 55 to 75 degrees F. I do notice the car is a bit slower on turnover but not bad. Maybe, I should wait a while on the battery. Would you just swap it out yourself?

Do you have a battery tender you can pop on there to make sure it’s periodically topped off?

Also, are you running in Sport mode.... that will also produce higher volt readings.

When it’s time, I would just swap it out yourself.

Thank you! I was not running sport mode. Is that voltage too high? I will buy a battery tender as it appears you need one to swap out the battery.

My voltage is 14.3-14.6 in sport mode on a relatively new battery.

I replaced battery without the battery tender, no issues

Not unheard of high, but a bit higher than a good strong battery should be running in warm temps in normal mode. I would toss the battery tender on there, get her fully charged and go from there.

At least for me and a few others a telltale sign that your battery is about to go flat is your stop start will not work.

You will get a display on your dash saying it's disabled.

If it still works........ I'd say your battery is still good for a while.

Just a follow up. $250 to recode a battery ...... what are they smoking.

I you are a DIY'er and you want to recode your battery and take care of your other maintenance interval resetting I would buy one of these gismos.

Thank you! I have some basic skills. I would not classify myself as a DIY'er. However, it just seemed crazy to pay $600 full retail for a battery and a recode when I could buy the battery for $231. Do I really need to recode?

I didn't when I changed mine out last year. Tech said don't worry about it.
