Default Interesting article about 911 generations

What you think about this article? Good or bad? Agree or not agree? I personally think it pretty close to reality. Let’s hear the 911 enthusiasts opinions.

Interesting article. Everybody has different taste so there is no right or wrong answer. I'm lucky enough to own owned 3 generations. Here's my take.

1. 993 - Last air cooled flat six with classic yet modern elegant design.
2. 991 - 911 finally got the proportion that fits in 21 century with performance and reliability.
3. 964 - It was controversial design when it came out but aged well. IMO 964 Turbo is one of best looking 911.
4. 997 - Porsche regained my respect with 997. Good 911 but never loved enough to own one.
5. 901 - It's the beginning.
6. G - I don't know I like anything came out in 70s. Generally not a fan of 70s design.
7. 996 - No comment.

I'm not sure about 992 where it's heading with me. It's growing on me but not enough yet to purchase one. I just can't get over certain elements of design.

I don’t think the article is that great to be honest. Just sums up some facts, the most obvious ones.
Maybe it makes a more interesting read for someone who is relatively new to Porsche.

so now we can all post our subjective top 10 ... ;-)

I find article interesting not because content that we all know. It's interesting because author put G series on top. I don't know how many people agree on that.

For a pure Porsche 911 driving experience the late G Series with the G50 transmissions are the best 911s, and the air conditioning actually works, that is a big plus.

I think the G series is fantastic, especially from an esthetics point of view. Driving wise, I will put the 993 above it, G series with a good 915 transmission drives fine by the way.

For me the 993 is the best looking 911, with the 991 a close second. What puts the G Series ahead in driving feel is that the 993 has power steering. G Series is original 911 purity in its most evolved state. I have owned 915 and G50 equipped 911s and a G50 is such an improvement over the 915 I can't even imagine saying the 915 drives fine. But to each their own.

I think articles like this have a flaw In putting the 991.1 and 991.2 together in one category. They each have merit that warrants separate ranking.

I bet the only thing anyone could agree on is a 996 at the bottom, lol.

I was a fan the day the 996 came out, defending it on the forums, even while I drive an 88 G50 Targa. No, the AC wasn’t really that good. The 964 was the car that made AC actually reliable. Back 15 years ago, the 993 was on top and the 964 was on bottom.

Ranking 911s has got to be a most impossible job in a world where a 911 - regardless of model - has been a top 5 best sports car on the planet for generations.

My personal ranking.....as others have said opinions may differ.

1. 901 the original
2. G series (16 year old dreams die hard)
3. 991
4. 997
5. 993
6. 964
7. 996
8. 992

You clearly did not maintain your AC system. I owned two G series cars and all that was need to make the AC cold and reliable was swapping out the dryer.

Nothing to do with my specific experience, just do a search. It was well known (Pelican articles, Panamera magazine, countless owners spending money on many different brands of aftermarket systems, etc.). Maybe someone swapped out the hoses in your car before you acquired it? The hoses were a big part as well, and admittedly became a requirement after the switch away from R12.

I don't need to do a search. I owned two G series 911s. They were both around thirty years old at the that time. In that thirty year life because of osmosis freon leaks out and moister gets in which causes the dryer to cease working and thus the AC does not function well. Replace the dryer and recharge the system and it's all good. I knew how secure a supply of R12 at that time as well so no need for new hoses. Any car that reaches thirty years old will need a similar AC service, irregardless of freon type. That is how car maintenance and molecular psychics work.

This is the second time in a week where you are basing your opinion on what you have read versus someone who has first hand experience. You might want to reconsider that for the future.
