How have you handled PPF on rear fender area?

Thank you everyone, very very helpful as always.
So on black car, matte black or glossy black Magnetic guards?
Do you think they would still stick on that area if it has double layer of PPF?

larger size
These guys can easily change the factory template. I made mine larger and also to run the length of the door on the kick panel as it takes a lot of hits. For some reason most of the kits skip the kick panel. I took the bottom layer off as it was starting to discolor at 5k miles. This would inidicate it is cheap quality. I would not leave the original for this reason as the good stuff last 10 years. Also, under a larger replacement it would create another "line". The me the factory piece was way to small to be effective.

++ on MagnaGrafik stone guards. This area takes a beating, especially on the 4S width fender flares. Sticks real well on top of one layer of PPF. Looks badass and very retro cool on a white car with black rims.

Ideally, this is the coverage you want for the sides:

another vote for PFF and magnagrafik stone guard. Xpel. you can see the edge of the film on the rear fender. no problem with the stone guard not sticking. i went with matte black instead of glossy and it goes well with the plastic lip spoiler and exhaust trim. it’s also cheaper.

I wrapped it on top of the factory ppf. The factory ppf is thicker than the other ppf and heard it diminishes value if you remove it
For those with PPF applied, the rear fender area with OEM film on the panel, when you have done PPF how have you handled this area?
Removed OEM protective film patch, then put PPF down? Has anyone put another OEM film patch on top of PPF? (not sure that even works)
I believe I read someone did an extra PPF patch over top of the PPF in that area...so that must be possible?
My thought is that area gets hammered so much that it likely would be the first area to redo.

Diminishes value? They sell those OEM pieces so one could always put them back on. Personally I would not have PPF put over the OEM stuff but listen to your installer and see what they say, and why.

Thanks for everyone’s comments, super helpful.
Thanks to those comments, I decided to double the ppf in those rear fender areas. I was going to also actually add the Magnagrafiks based on everyone’s comments here. Unfortunately though Dan told me they won’t work on two layers of PPF.

Wrap the full rocker, fender and body above the door in one piece. Then apply what you want on the rear fender for additional coverage. The seam at rear fender is very unsightly in my opinion.

Why is nobody talking about the dangers of removing the factory PPF and taking the the clear coat and/or paint with it. After all the paint on my ‘06 is 17 years old. Yesterday I declined rocker panel and rear quarter replacement of the PPF. I will live with the crazed OEM PPF or spend thousands on refinishing quarters and sacrificing originality.

I removed the existing and put PPF over it. that works fine however had a number of marks in PPF after a couple of years. having a black car I am a bit crazy keeping it clean. this spring i had them replace the PPF on that area and put an additional piece on by the fenders. looks great and frankly have to look pretty hard to see the additional section. now i can simply replace that section when it gets beat up
