Default How have you handled PPF on rear fender area?

For those with PPF applied, the rear fender area with OEM film on the panel, when you have done PPF how have you handled this area?

Removed OEM protective film patch, then put PPF down? Has anyone put another OEM film patch on top of PPF? (not sure that even works)

I believe I read someone did an extra PPF patch over top of the PPF in that area...so that must be possible?

My thought is that area gets hammered so much that it likely would be the first area to redo.

What color is your car?

On my 2014 White 991, I had the factory film replaced in late 2015 with a larger coverage custom Expel piece, mainly due to the expected factory film yellowing. After 4 more driving seasons, and another +48,000 miles, I just had the film replaced again in September. Life is good.

Same as LexVan. The OEM stone guard film has a tendency to yellow quickly. I too had the OEM film removed and had Xpel installed. The PPF is also tucked under the rear flat area under bumper which is prone to extensive damage.

Removing OEM Stone Guard

Installing Xpel PPF.

I have a black car. Did full ppf then did a 2nd layer oem style on top. I just have that piece replaced when needed. I might have a video showing it getting replaced. If I find it, I will upload it and post it here. Defiantly worth it on a heavily driven black car.

Just have them remove it before it gets done. If you plan to track the car you can get the magnetic pieces to put on when racing, or leave them on as some do.

Remove OE PPF. Install bigger PPF. Then MagnaGrafik guards:

Removed OEM film and applied PPF. Didn’t bother with a second layer, easily enough to pull and redo the panel when needed.

the area gets absolutely hammered so you do want PPF!

Thanks. To be clear, your 2nd layer, was it the OEM piece again over top of the PPF, or another piece of PPF on top of the PPF?

So no issues sticking these on top of PPF that was applied?

PPF cut in the same fashion as the oem piece on top of the ppf

so PPF on PPF

Someone posted a photo of a 991 with a custom rear PPF application that was quite artful...somewhat mimicking the cut of the factory protection but going much higher before curving back down to meet the rear wheel cutout. I have not been able to find it again, so my car has a straight line from the door handle back to the wheel cutout...which is just okay. Not that noticeable, but when I do see it...it just doesn't honor the shape of the fender (which is, admittedly, hard to do)...or offer as much protection.

Wish I could find that photo again...

My 2019 delivered with yellowish shark fins. I have a white car and it was noticeable on delivery so they start of yellowish and progressively get worse. Maybe it’s ok on darker colors.

I had mine removed on delivery and installed Xpel. The GTS is a wide body and after only a couple of months the Xpel was doing its job but it’s was starting to look marked with a few decent hits. So I also went with the magnet stone guards which can be put on and taken off in minutes, a second to attach and then a couple of mins to align with body curves. Highly recommend this setup
