Call a local dealer and see who they use to repair bumpers. I bet there's a mobile fix person that can repair that in one day while it's on the car.

I had an unfortunate incident with an unusually tall yellow parking stop/curb last year. It resulted in a big scuff in my front bumper, and some “spider webbing” of the paint. I had the front bumper removed, repaired, and repainted for about $1,200. It looks perfect now. I’d recommend the same corse of action for you.

Thanks for the first-person account! Good to hear it's not too crazy if I end up having to pay for it myself, if the insurance angle doesn't work out.

The insurance angle probably won't work out. I called my insurer and they said it would fall under collision insurance, not comprehensive. Not 100% sure what to do at this point. I could file a claim, but I'm betting it would affect my premium and would probably show up in the carfax later. $500 deductible (would insurance replace the PPF too??) vs probably close to $2000 if I do it out of pocket.

FWIW, I got two estimates for bumper repair (without PPF, for now). One estimate is ~$1550+tax and the other is ~$1200+tax. Both shops with good reputations. PPF quote is ~$350 more.

Does this sound reasonable?

for that price, I'd just go through insurance and just pay the deductible. don't worry about insurance - chances are premium will not go up, I have had some repair work done over the years where my insurance footed the bill and my premiums did not go up - even had a few speeding tickets. if you put in claim after claim, that is a different story. I really never worry about carfax or resale value - if you have proper documentation and the buyer really likes the car, they will buy it

I know the laws in the us and canada are different concerning insurance, but usually I avoid making a claim for these types of incidents. Insurance companies judge you on your number of claims, not the amount. I had a couple of years ago a bad luck streak with cars and a few incidents where i had not been responsible, it made no diff to them. Because i had claimed so much in a certain period they were raising my premiums a lot. In your case Its technically just a superficial scrape, there is no structural damage to the bumper and no risk of hidden damage behind. My rule is usually not to claim under 3k damage. For the porsche i’d prob even say 5-6k as repairs costs skyrocket quickly. As another member posted, keep all your bills to reassure the next buyer, take good pics of before and after.
