On the OEM "Roof Transport System", could anyone with the rack kindly let me know what the thickness of the crossbars is? (I'd like to order the bike rack at the same time and would need to know this info.)

I'm also curious: does anyone know what's the maximum number of bikes someone has been able to fit on this roof rack?

I'm planning to get this for my 992 + the 1UP bike racks. I'm hoping to fit 3 road and/or cyclocross bikes.

By the way, I have a 1UP 3-rack system on our SUV and the racks have great.

i stated above I used 1.5” bolts. I use 1UP for bikes. I never had more than 2 bikes. Handle bars, height of frames, seats, will determine if you can fit 3 bikes. No idea how you are going to fit 3 riders.

Thanks so much! (Sorry I missed the bolt size from earlier, so thank you for confirming.)

With regards to the riders, I have 2 kids, so it will make things easier to fit inside. (But I was also contemplating a second bike for a rider, since my daughter sometimes switches between two bikes during an event.)

Looking at our current 1UP configuration on our SUV, our 3 racks are 22" from edge to edge, so perhaps there might even be room for a 4th rack. (At that point, I'll probably just need to grab the wife's SUV.)

It took a while to track down the roof transport system, but here's my car with 3 bikes!

The 1.5" bolts with the 1UP racks didn't work due to the sunroof, so I swapped for the flush mount mounting hardware. Then there was a slight whistling noise due to the small ~1/4" opening between the clamp and the roof bar, but I solved with some foam weather striping.

what's the benefit between front wheel on vs front wheel off?

I have the porsche cross bars. Looks like Tule and 1UP are good options. Any others?

Things I should know? this will be my irst roof top bike rack.

Thanks,

I have the Thule ProRide XT bike racks. They're great. Front wheel stays on, and bike is clamped by the downtube. Been driving 70mph+ with no issues.

I still have to get myself some 991 roof bars. Eventually. I swear I just saw them for $499 at Suncoast, and now they're $685, dammit! Was I dreaming?

Thanks,
It’s just a matter of whether you want to spend the time to take the front wheel off and use an axle adapter. I’ve used both over the years and prefer the simplicity of wheel-on racks. Throw the bike on the roof, clamp it down, and you’re done. There is basically no wobble or play with a good bike tray. The ones you mentioned are good. I use a Rocky Mounts Brass Knuckles. Previously used a Rocky mounts Tomahawk. And I have a 1up hitch rack on the family SUV.

Edit: also, I prefer wheel-on racks that don’t touch the frame and hold the wheel instead. Less chance of damaging the frame.
