Default Big coolant leak

I can't believe this. Just got my 991.1 GTS back from an electrical issue yesterday. Today I pull into my garage, shut it down and it dumps a couple of liters of coolant on the floor. It had not been running hot at all. Expansion tank or water pump? I will refill the coolant in the morning and see if it spits it out again. Would like to drive it back to the shop. thoughts?

Just thinking through my actions yesterday. I had the coolant cap off, and I'm not sure that I put it back on tight - after doing so now and feeling it click in place. Possible that it could have burped out the coolant because of this once it was hot?

This is possible. Also, the shop may have "topped-off" the coolant for you. If they were a little too generous, it may have overflowed when you turned off the engine. The engine is a large heat sink particularly after its just been turned off with no air or water circulating around it. In any case, check the coolant level once the engine has cooled down. If necessary, add just enough to get above minimum. Take the car out for a good run. When you get back, check for puddling. Then check level again once cooled. Hopefully all is okay.

I let the car cool down and topped off the expansion tank - it took a couple of liters. Sadly it is dripping very slowly down the drivers side of the engine. It doesn’t look like I spilled any, but I will check it in the morning and see how much is on the garage floor. Seems like an expansion tank issue. Is this a big job on a 991.1? I will also run it in the morning and see if it spits it out like it did when I shut it off hot.

Let me know if anyone else has any other thoughts, or has seen this before.

Cheers,

Den

Is your car 15 or 16? I have 16 gts (Oct 2015 build), there was factory campaign for coolant expansion tank. Campaign code was WG42 and my dealer replaced coolant expansion tank in May 2017. I don't think campaign was due to leaks. It was relate with false cooling system alarm. Expansion tank is not very difficult to replace. You need to remove rear spoiler to replace it. I suspect coolant reservoir or it's hose based on your description but you better make sure.

Thanks for the response. My car is a a '15 so a 991.1.

Update - the garage floor was dry this morning, so it is not just leaking out of anywhere. I just got back from a drive ... I brought it up to temperature and cam back home and let it idle in the garage for a couple of minutes before shutting it down. Nothing ... no coolant leak at all. Maybe I didn't get it hot enough for the expansion tank crack to expand, or maybe it was the fact that I didn't have the cap on tight. I just don't want to get stranded on the side of the road. Opinions?

Model year 15 and 16 gts are same 991.1. That's why I talked about factory campaign. I don't know whether it affected 2015 gts also. Did you see any warning lights? If there was large amount of coolant loss as you described you should see the coolant level warning light. Cracked coolant reservoir is quite rare on 991. Actually I never heard about it so far but who knows. If you didn't tightened the reservoir cap it could be the culprit. If there is mysterious coolant loss you should do the pressure test. It usually shows the source of leak. Like LexVan said do not use tap water.

thanks for the clarification on 15 / 16, I thought incorrectly that 16 went to 991.2. No warning lights at all. I'm glad to hear that the reservoir cracking on our cars is rare, it is more and more probable that I did not have the cap n tight, as I know I had it off the day before. I will take it for a another run this evening and see what happens.

I did a VIN search for recalls on my car and it states that nothing is open.

I appreciate the input!

Default UPDATE

Well, it looks like my issue was caused by a loose coolant reservoir cap. I spoke with an indy tech today who also confirmed just how sensitive our cars are to having 100% sealed systems. Drove the car a couple more times - tonight quite spirited, with no issues. Sorry for crying wolf ...
