My car has 34k and is 8 years old, transmission shifts good. I doubt I will own it at the 12 year mark when it is advised to replace it but I do want it to run its best for the rest of my ownership.
Hi there,

I am wondering if you had to change the pan or just did drain and refill. Can you share your experience? I am thinking of getting it done and debating if replacing the pan would be necessary. My car is at 65k miles, 991.1.

I just had the PDK service done at about 70K miles in my 2012.5 C2S before storing for the winter. It’s been about 8 years of trouble free driving, so I thought it was time. Trying to avoid any problems with the PDK since I’m out of warranty. Cost at my dealer:
PDK Labor $513.27
Transmission Oil Pan
PDK Transmission Fluid-(6)
Misc. parts
Parts-subtotal $464.45
Total PDK Tran flush $977.72

P.S. The filter is internal to the transmission oil pan so it makes no sense to replace fluid alone.

Just had the dealer do my PDK service last week. Here is the breakdown:
Labor $315
Parts $28
Fluid $260 6qts
Tax $52
Total $655

Not sure why some dealers are replacing the oil pan, mine did not and did not see a need to change it. If the plug is all that needs to be removed, why is the pan being changed if not leaking or damaged?

There is a filter built into the pan, however if the filter isn’t dirty then...

Correct, there is a filter along the botton of the plastic pan that filters the fluid as it goes into the solenoids. The pan also has magnets on the sides that trap any shavings, those get clogged up as well.

I changed all of the drivetrain fluids over the summer, not a difficult process.

How did the inside of your pan look? Did the magnet/filter have anything visible on them?

I made the mistake of not capturing a shot of it but this is what it looks like. The raised area and white square is the filter element.
The piece on the lower left hand corner and top right are magnets.
The round piece in the middle is the area where the fluid is pumped up into the solenoids.
The other round piece is the drain plug area.

LN Engineering makes a billet pan that is serviceable but its like $1300!!! As opposed to the ~$290 that the oem piece costs. It doesn't make sense unless you're tracking your car often and need to change the fluid more often than 120k miles. I would also question the heat retention/dispersion on the metal pan vs the plastic.

That is about what the dealer here charges for the service here. The pan with integrated filter is about $400. I replace the PDK clutch oil fluid at 6 year/60k miles.

Because the filter is integrated into the pan.

The parts catalogue for the 991 has come confusing information in it.

Two different part numbers are listed for the transmission fluid:

000 043 204 20: 75 W 90 MOBILUBE PTX FM (FM is friction modifier)

000 043 210 12: 75 W 90 MOBILUBE PTX

Also listed for the front differential
000 043 204 20: MOBILUBE PTX 75 W 90 (No "FM")

Typing the 000 043 204 20 part number into the dealers website says it was superseded by 000 043 210 12.

Are some transmissions supposed to get a friction modifier added to the PTX?

The fluid that came out of my transmission was a much darker amber color than the light-honey colored PTX I put in.

The PDK tranny does have 2 different types of fluid in it.

Clutch fluid and Gear lube.

yep. You’re right about that. The clutch fluid is ffl-3 and is separate from the fluids listed there. These are slightly different (maybe) for the gearbox portion of the trans.
