I went from an M5 to a first year Mini Cooper S. Why would anyone do this? A used M5 was a big, expensive family car, while a used Mini was cheap and fun. I had two car seats in the back of the mini and could actually fit my stroller as well if I was creative about how I stored it back there.

My Mini took on-ramps faster than my M5 did. I had a Boxster before that, but needed 4 seats.

I’m back in a 911 now, the most ideal of all of them given my 2 kids and pure driving pleasure. The 996 in the corners is also better than the M5 and can hang with the Mini until the road flattens out. The Mini is toast after that.

The mini was fun. My mini was a bit of a piece of junk with lots of little bizzare issues. It was small, whereas the newer ones are larger.

That's a great testament to the 500 Abarth, Pete. I do understand the fun part. I had one of the first GTIs, which was a hoot. But the Fiat isn't a four door wagon, like the Clubman.

i've been driving my daughter's loaded 2014 mini cooper, mostly on weekends to play softball/golf, but just purchased a low mile 2003 c4s. obviously they aren't really comparable, but the mini is a fun car to play around in and for city driving. plenty of room for someone 6'2". thinking about parting with it but with under 20k miles, and with many, many used mini's on the market, probably will just keep it for short trips, errands, etc rather than break out the c4s

LOL @ comparing a Mini to a M5. Like comparing my golf swing to DJ.

My daily driver is a MK VII GTI (manual) and it provides no shortage of fun, including on the track. I'm 6' 4" and have ample room and find the ergonomics a big step up from my 993 - perhaps not surprising with a 20 year head start - and over my wife's XC90 (whose "infotainment" system is downright awful). Nice to have a car that I can wring out, in modest traffic, without feeling like I'm endangering my license or other drivers. I tell other Porsche owners its probably 90% of the fun for 25% of the cost and stress.

Thanks for a great and succinct explanation of why those "underpowered" small cars are so much fun.

I owned a Works Clubman, I think 2011. It was not great. Even in a straight line it was sketchy. Torque steer was just horrendous. I drove it for a year and traded for a Golf R. As someone in an earlier post suggested, the R will run circles around the Clubman and it has more room. Of course that was in the earlier version Clubman before they upsized.

I would only pick the vette if I was budget conscious. Stay with the 911 if driving fun biased.

Just my opinion, but sometimes really flogging a car to find its limits in acceleration, braking, cornering, etc. can be fun it itself. On the street, it is much easier to do this in a light, balanced car with modest horsepower and tires.

Many years ago, I bought a 6 year-old X1/9 that had been stored for much of its life. When I first drove it, the combination of hardened 145R13 tires and 2000 lb curb weight made sliding around corners very possible at 25 mph, even with only 75 hp. Very fun, and not so much law breaking. I would only push my 991 that hard on a track, with lots of run-off.

Drove a couple of Minis this afternoon...a stick two door and an automatic Clubman S. I was impressed. I was thinking a Clubman S with a stick would be pretty cool. But then I got in my 911... ;-)

Really only applies to NA, I think.

NAs are fun when pushed to the limit. Impossible to do that legally in a modern GT Porsche without seriously breaking the law, for instance. I've dealt with that before and it's frustrating. All the work of getting speed is over in a flash and the power band is so broad that you don't have to really work the motor to keep it on the boil.

Slower NA sports cars can be quick, but have to be worked to keep them in the power band. Lots of gear changes, heel-toe and noise = Fun.

This is why I am adding a 987.2S to the garage! 3 pedals, 6 gears. More rare than a GT2 at the moment! lol.

On second thought, the Minis might actually be more fun around town. Out on the road, the 911 wins hands down. Just my $0.02 worth.
