Default Rain advice please

This Friday I have to drive to Northern California or further north, from Los Angeles. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be raining straight for 4 or 5 days. Just looking for any good advice for driving 8 hours a day , in rain, on the freeway. Also, my wipers through out my driving life have always started skipping after an hour or so of continued use. I have water proofed the windshield and conditioned the rubber on the wipers , but to no avail. The skipping always comes back. Any advice on that subject, thanks in advance!

"Conditioned the rubber". What the heck is that?

I use Aquapel on all the glass. No wipers needed.

What about new OE wipers?

Clay your windshield the next time you wash the car.

If rain is expected to be heavy with standing water - prevailing wisdom is to increase tire pressure by approx 10%.
This increase your PSI creating a better, smaller contact patch aka footprint which in turn reduces chances of aqua planing (hydroplaning).
If you don’t think it’ll be that severe - just make sure pressures are correct. The last thing you want is low pressures on wet roads.

I agree +1. Your windshield gathers the same amount of contaminates as your paint so claying it removes the crud. Prep the glass with a good water repellent and buy a fresh set of OEM blades.

If you used Rain-X on the windshield that can actually lead to wiper skipping in my experience (just Google "rain-x wiper skipping" and you'll see plenty of others complaining about this). I'd recommend trying to return it to virgin glass, which isn't as easy as you'd hope. You can do a web search for that as well.

When did Porsche start hydrophobic coating on windshields (and other glass)? Anyone know about compatibility of aftermarket treatments with the factory glass?

As I said, I'm using Aquapel on my factory glass.

I don't think Porsche coats the windshield. Only the side glass, and that started at least in 2005/2006 with the 997 and 987.

I'm a convert with Lex on the Aquapel. Clay the glas well, clean it and apply a good coating of Aquapel. You can drive wiperless most of the time.

Does the Aquapel make the wipers skip? Did so on the one car I tried it on (not a P-car) and I have avoided it since.

That's the thing......I don't need to use the wipers.

I'm a bad example for this whole conversation, Sorry. I don't drive much in the rain. I applied the Aquapel mainly to aid in the fast & easy removal of dried bug guts, when I wash the glass after a run. Works great for this too, btw.

I'm very pleased with the Aquapel. I did get caught in a few huge rain storms last fall, and it worked as expected. No clatter. I needed to use the wipers every once in a while to clear the very-very light mist on certain other drives......the light mist is just too light to have any mass to assist rolling off the coating with any vehicle speed.

This is what I used on mine:
Griot's Garage fine glass polish

It works very well, just be aware that it will leave white residue if it touches black plastic or rubber.

Try cleaning your wipers with an alcohol swab.. it'll refresh the rubber

I'm driving the Golf the rest of the week and leaving the 911 in the garage

Rain-X. Use their windshield washer fluid. Water not beading up, wash the windshield. Wipers skipping, wash the windshield. Works for me. At highway speeds, you would be surprised at how well the water blows off even without the wipers.
