Radar detectors: current state?
#46
valentine update for me was $200
Plus shipping with insurance each way and 4 to 8 weeks. so figure close to $300 .
There have been some updates to the V1, but you have to pay for them, something like $100 including shipping.
To get the most out of the V1, you have to pay for the latest updates, buy the bluetooth module, and pair with the YaV1 or JBV1 apps. Then there is learning curve for those apps and the V1 has to learn its environment before a lot of the falses go away. I think it is a lot to ask for an owner, unless he/she is really into that kind of stuff.
It is a good detector if you know how to use it with the apps.

I just bought my first Porsche three days ago (14 Panamera GTS) and I love it, I was thinking of getting a Radar dector of some sort and to my surprise when I picked up the car it had an integrated one already installed. It’s a K40 Electronics and so far it works pretty good (especially as I didn’t pay for it)haha
Its very minimal and only has two lights which blink if radar / laser is detected (Left light front, Right Light Rear) and voice prompts from a speaker somewhere in the car (its like the ticket angels speak to me) simple and easy along with waze I can’t complain yet.

Get the Flam throwers ready. I'm on my second K40. First on my 09 Targa(had for ~7yrs) and now on my 17 Cab S. No tickets/No pull overs. Just my real world testing. BTW i heard the cops are pretty relentless here in NJ. Many Many trips from NJ to NYC and NJ to Lehigh over the years.

What is the current state of radar detector emission shielding? The State troopers where I live have equipment that detects radar detectors (which are also illegal and can be confiscated.)

Yes, thanks, He starts out by saying he has 1 FRONT anntenna. There is most of his problem. You need 2 front and 2 rear.
Good
* Radar antenna is HOT and has beat everything else I've owned, including the Uniden R3
* Display's use of colors
* Single cable between engine bay and interior cabin makes install of RD/Laser easy
Bad
* Police K band is often filtered like BSM's
* Police Ka band is learned and locked out
* 2 years and the VIP is still in a broken state of product development
Ugly
* Display is hard to read with polarized glasses
* Audio alerts are quiet for K/Laser
* Poor ramp-up
* Touching the display often results in a double press, muting and unmuting the alert
* Auto-brightness randomly stops working
* Only a single radar frequency is displayed at a time unless you use the impractical spectrum analyzer mode
* GPS and BSM filtering both display as "FalseList" with no differentiation
TL;DR - The Stinger VIP was promising but Stinger has failed to make a reliable radar detector after more than 2 years of development. Maybe someday they'll finish it, but for now I would avoid it.
K band radar is non existent in most countries. Its ancient. So I get it should be filtered out. We went to Ka decades ago, and most are laser now anyway.
So his main problem is K, which would not be an issue in my country. He does need 4 antenna though. That is a known fact, one does almost nothing. It would be pure chance they pointed the laser near that one, for it to work. The latest ones are epic and small to hide.
You need minimum of two per end. So again, that is big dollars. But if you want real protection, you need to spend big. You guys are once again luckier in that its not illegal in some states, so you don't need the added benefit of hiding it.

I know mikedotd and have met him and saw his Stinger VIP install. I will say that the Stinger underperforms, no matter the cost. Even Escort will perform better in laser, and that is saying a lot.
Mikedotd says he has 1 antenna, meaning 1 radar antenna. You don't need a front and rear if you don't want arrow functionality, 1 antenna is good enough.
Mikedotd has 6 laser Jammers from the stinger. 3 receive, 3 send. It does not jam the Stalker and Dragoneye guns effectively. He has been in contact with Stinger for a long time and getting firmware updates but still cannot jam this guns.
The point of a laser jammer is to slow down to the posted speed limit and shut off the jammer and allow the officer to see you are driving the speed limit. With the Stinger, we were able to get readings and the Stinger can't jam so you spend all that money and will still get a ticket. Sure, if where you are driving don't use those lidar guns, you may be good with Stinger but you are spending all that money, why not get something that works 100% as advertised?
Radar Roy is not really the best source to cite, if you know his history and the people behind the site now. If anything, he sold the product, wouldn't he want to say all positive things about it so he can get you to buy it and money in his pocket?
I have the ALP and Radenso RCM. The ALP work great and jam every single gun out there. Highly recommend getting ALP for laser defense. The Radenso radar detector has better false filtering than the Uniden so if you want a quiet detector, consider Radenso.

ALP with radar and loudspeaker.
I had 3 front laser in the Targa. Was not too worried about getting gunned from behind where I travel. Most enforcement aims at oncoming traffic.
I never drive stupid fast on any road so I probably don't need anything, but it's nice to know when someone's watching.

Just completed a road trip from NYC to Miami and back with my Radenso Pro M. Quiet as a mouse in church and very sensitive and super long detection especially when LEO's dont bother to hide off angle in the dark. Kept me safe and secure with virtually no falses but Mazdas...doesnt seem to like them. Super unit very quiet and very portable.
Just my .02c.

Price
Looks like the redenso Radenso RC M is around 2500 including the ALP system and will integrate on the same backplane. The escort Max CI is around $3500 plus install which is just ludicrous. Glad I bought mine when I did as these things have gone crazy price wise. Here is an interesting review it looks as if the Redenso gives a little less warning.

RCM is a remote installed mine is a carry-on unit. As far as testing....it all depends on the terrain location etc. All I can say is that I am completely satisfied with the range and the non-existent falsing..which helps keep down the screaming(by wife and kids) to turn it down or off as was with my Valentine..

I picked up an Escort 360C and loaded the Escort Live App, along with Waze about a month ago. The pairing of these has been SPOT-ON. I really like the comms between the in-car detector and Escort Live, seeing other Escort 306C users alerts really helps identify those risky areas and traps. Its only going to get better as more adopt the technology.
The Waze pairing provides some additional insights on road hazards along with Police activity from the "collective" community. And we all know people live to post in social media these days. Best use of social media yet, IMHO.
All together, almost bulletproof. Thinking the evolution is going to be adding something like an iPod so I can run both the Escort Live and Waze. Using the Rennline mounts to position the devices.
Today we did a 4 hour pull from northern Illinois area down to Champaign-Urbana for a college visit. The combo picked apart every lone, and grouping of police speed traps along the route. Made for a super fun ride.
Cheers all.
