Default Oil Temps

What are the typical max oil temps you see during spirited and track driving? I was up to 250 for a short period of time this weekend. At what temperature should I start getting concerned and back off to let it cool down? 3rd radiator needed?

Thank you!

I've seen similar temperature on a hot track day. With good synthetic oil that should be no problem. I'm running Motul 81000 5W-40 and if I planned to do a lot of track days, I might consider a slightly heavier oil.

I wouldnt worry until you hit 270F. 250F is fine.

I do change my oil every 4-5 track days though

Corvettes hit their limp mode at roughly 320F.

i wouldnt worry about it since there are a lot of fail safe features build into the car (ie warnings and limp modes). until you reach that point, i say drive it like you stole it :-)

It's not a problem. It may be that you are driving it well.

Both my C2's would run at consistent 250-255 on the track. I believe this is the normal track operating range.

I run around 40 track days per year and have seen 280+ several times. I also pull my true coolant temps from the CAN bus and saw some pretty high numbers (210+) so I installed the center radiator (note that the display on the MFD showed 194 the entire time). Before the center radiator I had to short shift at 6K in order to keep the temps down. Will report back later on the success of the center radiator’s effectiveness during super hot July and August events. Fingers crossed...

Oil 1: Mobil 1 0W40
Oil 2: Castrol Edge 0W40
Oil 3: TOTAL 9000 5W40
Oil 4: Pennzoil Ultra 5W40

Why would you recommend a motorcycle oil for automobile use.

My 991.1 C2S would run near 240° when pushed on the track in 85° weather, and i would have added the middle radiator if I had done much of that.

But my 991.2 C2S/X51 seldom goes over 200-210° Now i see why Porsche did not include the middle radiator on the. 991.2 GTS. Maybe it's telling me that b4 i add the middle radiator on this one i need one of those tunes for 530 HP and 480 ft-lbs 😃

That's surprising because I saw well over 240 deg oil temp on my base 991.2 at the track. It was, however, a near-100 degree day.

As another non-scientific data point.

I use 5W-50. On hot 100F days, I see a tick over 250F without a 3rd radiator. As the other person said, the car will go into limp mode if it detects any issues so I wouldn't worry about it.
