Default Carrier bolt not lining up. Help plz.

Replacing the serpentine belt and all going well until trying to get the carrier bolt back in. Seems something is out of line I don't want to persuade it too much.

I did loosen 3 bolts surrounding it.

Dude you are kidding me.

I know this is the "technical" forum but you will find very few people here that know how to turn a screw driver.

Plenty of "what color contrasting seat belts should I order" guys...but sadly that won't help you.

Without a more definite response so far, I'd guess that the engine settled a little in relation to the carrier and the bolt hole. You may need to find a safe jack point to lift the engine just a tad, it probably wouldn't take a lot of force, cushioned by something to spread the load like a block of wood or rubber.

This would only be a possibly correct answer if the targeted bolt hole (threaded part) if slightly lower than the hole in the carrier. I can't tell in the photos.

I just looked through the detailed shop manual and don't see anything addressing alignment when resetting this bolt.

I think you're right. Can I jack it slightly from the oil pan with some wood?

I no longer have a 991.1 to look at, the 991.2 has a plastic pan so I can't compare. Looking at the 991.1 shop manual (link at the bottom), it looks like you can but I'm afraid to be responsible for saying yes if it goes bad . I'm looking at page 5247 in this manual I've put up on my DropBox.

100109 LOWERING THE ENGINE .
3.1. Support the engine at the oil pan using hydraulic garage jack H 2 SL WE 1032 and transmission jack plate of transmission jack V.A.G. 1383 A WE 1082 .

The 997.2 and the 991.1 engine are effectively the same. I do recall that I supported the engine on my 997.2 at the oil pan (back edge I think) using a 4x4 with a jack.

I can't find any mention of this on the 991 forum, but in the 997 forum I found this so far:

I also see a 996 engine being lifted similarly at the 13:30 point in this YouTube video (link includes offset to that time, he may show it earlier but I found it here skipping ahead):
.

Edited to include 996 reference since it may not be apples to apples.

Good job. Glad it worked out.

A good number of DIY folks tackled belt replacement.

Good to know a little lift and it lined up.

Reenlist is always been a big help. This was a diy weekend:

- new serpentine belt
- install PSE
- install PSE panel switch
- platidip rear bumper emblems
- paint rear bumper reflectors

Need to dial a few things in but got it all done. The car goes to the dealer on Wednesday for PSE programming.

I just got the car last week - 2012.5 with 16k miles.

The belt looked fine, but since I had everything off I thought I'd spend the $30 bucks on a new belt. Even though I did have some frustration with the carrier bolt.

The way I look at it, I just renewed my man card for another year.
