Default Used oil

For those of us wh change our own oil. Where are you taking the used oil? I just brought some to my local parts store, granted it was a lot, and he was not happy, said I should only bring 8 or 9 quarts at a time. I explained that I had let it build up and he took it. Anyone else doing anything different?

I take mine to the recycling center that is part of the county dump. They would have no issue with nine quarts.

I also thought that environmental regs required service station's to accept used oil. This was incentive to preventive people from just dumping the oil on the ground.

Here in CA is Usually Auto part store with this sign up front, you can also google locations near you. Some trash co will also take it with your trash if you call ahead.

we have the same laws in Mass. I had about 9 gallons. And he thought that was too much. If I let it add up again I’ll just spread it around to different stores.

Most auto part stores will take it, just give them a call to check. Near me AutoZone and Advanced Auto Parts both do, I'm sure there are others.

If you're gonna do that, may as well make a trip each oil change with 9 quarts. I'd just try a different store that doesn't give you crap for bringing 9 gallons at a time.

I am screwed. I have been saving it up for years and I must have a miscellaneous 25 gallons from multiple vehicles and a boat. I tried to leave it behind with my ex wife but she caught on and nagged me to come get it. Now my current wife hates it. I suspect that when I sell the house, the new homeowners will hate me one day when they find it hidden under the stairs.

Most states I've lived in (Midwest, & presumably others) require any business that changes oil to also accept it for recycling free of charge. So whenever I need to get rid of used oil, I just drop it off at Walmart, Blaines, or any auto dealer. Obviously these places don't advertise it, but they are required to accept it. My local recycling transfer station and Advance Auto parts also accepts it.

I take mine to the local O'Reilly's, and most of the time bring 2 five-quart jugs. Ocassionally I bring a bit more. But I also buy the same amount of new oil, and never hear complaints.

If you are in San Mateo County, Recology picks up used oil curbside. They give you 4 quart containers - milk jugs - to fill with the used oil.

But does Recology pick up more than one 4 quart jug at the same time? I guess you could put out individual jugs on separate days for pick-up, but it would be more convenient if the jugs for a complete change could be picked up at the same time.

Yes. Ask the driver for the plastic containers, as many as you need.
