Default Crappy 911 Back up Cameras...

Is it me or are the back up cameras on the 911's just garbage? I have a Mercedes and its like a hi def view with 360 degree and zoom and all sorts of goodies.
When I put it in reverse on my 911 and look at the screen, its like low def, blurry and overall just crappy.

Is it my camera or are all 911 back up cams like this? Any way to retro fit with something say 2018 resolution?

I agree. They are pricey plus have remarkably poor resolution so I didn’t order one on my 991.1.

They must use the same supplier as Audi (no surprise). I have an '15 S3 that I love and have an aftermarket (but plug and play) B/U camera and it's great, but just test drove a new RS3 the other day and the image is the squished and lousy representation just like the 911. I am wondering, however, if it's actually just the optic/camera and if there is a way to swap it out... Will have to start investigating after I get my T in a couple months. I was really surprised how bad it is in both cars.

My problem with it is not the resolution but that "fish-eye" lens which makes it seem like you're just about to hit things that are still far away.

Garbage... AND the only way i can adjust my brightness is with the silly light bulb button next to the oil temp guage (dont have any fancy options on my car). Believe it or not, it better than my 15 macan, but at least that had better controls.

Morbid is a word that comes to mind when describing the back up camera in these cars BUT we all know that ain’t why we’re buying ‘em... I’d recommend saving your money on the work around as the 992 will solve the problem for you and Porsche will be happy to take your money once more

Other offerings have better setups—not to mention a better display in the rearview mirror in GM's case—but the camera/screen in my 991.2 a nevertheless a real luxury in tight spaces after no camera in the GT4 and 20+ years of driving Porsches without them. And it's far better than the early aftermarket reverse cameras. The Gumpert Apollo's setup was abysmal, making the 991.2 setup seem like IMAX.

Would be curious to know if one of the audio suppliers here on RL offers a better camera that could be swapped in, or if the problem is on the PCM side?

I hope the 992 has better backup camera. I hate to see cheap parts fudged in expensive cars. Dumb manufacturer tactics.

I am surprised that Porsche doesn't charge extra to have better camera as option. I mean you get options on fuel caps....lol.

I always thought the problem was that the lens was cloudy from chemical etching or scratches... but I guess it is just an endemic problem.

Would like a higher res camera yes, but really I’m not watching movies on the screen. Just to see I don’t run anything over while backing up. And for that purpose it does perfectly fine. It’s a sports car.

Google lambo countach backup procedure (or watch Doug Demuro’ video) for how good is 991 owners have it.

I came from a first generation 991 very highly options but without a back up camera as they did not exist for the 2012 model year. My current car has one and even though it is kind of crappy it’s certainly better than nothing. I realize Porsche should do a better job.

^ LOL. My hopes for the 992 have very little to do with the quality of its backup camera.
