I used a 3in extension on a 3/8in 1breaker bar to get off the bolt and it was easy. I gripped the wheel with one hand and the breaker bar with the other.

Does the steering wheel bolt need to be replaced for this install? Is this the correct part?

I don’t see why this part would need to be replaced but if you are ordering a new steering wheel it will come with it. I used the new one but it’s not clear to me why it needs to be replaced (that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t, just that I don’t know enough to say why so I did it to be safe?).

Anyway, yes, that looks like it - OP has a photo of it in the very first post.

Mine came with the new bolt. Yes, you need the new bolt, since it has loctite on it.

I do know of someone that did not replace the bolt when they did it and everything was still fine.

Thanks everybody. The reason I’m asking is I’m preparing for JCR shift paddle install. I ordered the bolt and a couple spares from Suncoast.

I understand what you mean by the loctite but couldn’t the op, alternatively, just buy the blue loctite stuff and dab some on? I’m not trying to be a smarta**, I’m really curious as to if this bolt is consider a “wear” item? I can see engine bolts that may “stretch”, but on the steering wheel??

I just added a bit of blue loctite. No issues.

You mean torque to 37ft/lbs and then turn the bolt another 90 degrees (1/4 turn) ?

I did this install last night and am not feeling very confident about it. I torqued to 37 plus one more little bump and had to reuse the stock steering wheel bolt with a dab of loctite.

The replacement bolts I ordered from Suncoast (mentioned by me earlier in this thread) were about 2.5mm long - the stock bolt was about 1.5mm. This is for .2GT3RS

Does anyone know where to get the 1.5mm stock bolt and can anyone confirm the proper torque specs? 37 ft lb PLUS 1/4 turn seems like A LOT. Thanks RL

I borrowed a friend’s digital torque wrench that measured angle torque for the second step.

Thanks, it is good. Somewhat on topic but if someone needs a replacement airbag cover I have just 1 left from the ones I sourced for those that want to customize their trim ring or crest.

Thanks Mike - I will reinstall the bolt tonight. Can anybody weigh in on whether I may have screwed something up torquing to 37 ft/lbs or don’t worry about it?

In some cars the airbag system is still alive with the ignition off. This was certainly true in my M5. Pulling any connector to an airbag component can generate an air bag fault. Safest way to avoid any potential airbag fault is to only pull these connectors with the battery disconnected.

Great post. Did you have any issues after re-connecting your battery? Do you know why a dealer would have to re-code the replacement wheel? If you didn't do that on your new wheel, what would the after affects be?
