I wanted to post an update to say that our "gen2" versions of both 8100 X-cess 5W40 and 8100 X-clean 5W40 have started to ship to distributors and should arrive at most online retailers and dealers this summer.
Our primary reason for reformulating was due to new standards from BMW to meet their improved LL-01 and LL-04 standards on 2019+ vehicles, but it also gave us a chance to achieve the new Porsche C40 approval on our X-clean 5W40 gen2 product.
Full details on the launch can be found here: INTRODUCING 8100 X-CESS 5W40 GEN 2 AND X-CLEAN 5W40 GEN2
Here are the basics:
8100 X-cess 5W40 gen2 - will eventually phase out current product as it retains the same approvals (Porsche A40, VW 502 00 / 505 00, MB 229.5/226/5) but is an improved formula to retain the adjusted BMW LL-01 standard.
8100 X-clean 5W40 gen2 - new product is reformulated and has approvals for Porsche C40**, VW 511 00**, GM dexos2, MB, 229.52/226.5, and adjusted BMW LL-04 standard. Will exist alongside the "first gen" or current product as that formula offers Porsche A40 and VW 502 00 / 505 00 / 505 01. **new Porsche C40 and VW 511 00 standards are not backwards compatible.

What compromises were made to hit the new certifications?

No compromises were made as the new OEM tests required a stronger additive package to maintain the BMW approval for 2019+ or receive new approvals from Porsche/VW (in the case of X-clean). Compared to the existing products, both gen2 products have higher shear stability, longer oil life, and enhanced piston deposit control to avoid LSPI.

Yes, while the Porsche A40 approval already has LSPI standards in place that the current 8100 products meet, the gen2 products have a new additive package for increased deposit control that helps to further combat LSPI and, by association, lower engine wear.

Motul, can you please post a VOA of the newest oil? Thank you.

Since X-Clean Gen2 is not backwards compatible with Porsche A40 standards .....Would there be a comparable mid SAPS A40 approved oil available ?
The reason I ask is my 997.1 prefers a mid SAPS low calcium oil to further address LSPI issues.
Thx !

I would like to see a UOA of the 0w40. My last Mobil1 0w40 tested out of spec for viscosity after 3500 miles and 9 months. I changed to LiquiMoly 0w40. Was going to go with M1 5w50 but would like to see how Motul oil tests out.

X-clean 5W40 gen 1 will still be available alongside gen 2 and will hold Porsche A40 for now.
Porsche will be ending mid SAPS oils for A40 in the near future much like VW has ended mid SAPS for 502.

Can you provide more info on mid saps and how the changes in manufacturer standards are likely to effect the engine? Thank you.

C40 will be exclusively mid SAPS for new cars fitted with GPF (gasoline particulate filter) and the Porsche A40 will be exclusively full SAPS.
All that said, preventing LSPI isn't directly related to the level of SAPS and relies on elements such as the quality of base oil and balanced levels of magnesium, moly, and calcium. Porsche A40 approved oils like X-cess 5W40 (not simply oils "recommended" for the A40 application) should keep your engine running the way Porsche has intended.

Mid SAPS products are traditionally used for the protection of sensitive emissions equipment by lowering metallic additives that are used for anti-wear purposes mostly. These metallic additives poison and damage catalytic converters and DPF's and GPF's. In the case of Porsche applications, high-performance engines with high power and lower displacement, a product with more of those metallic additives known as full SAPS offers the best performance and protection for models without the latest emissions equipment.

Does a mid SAPS oil provide any less protection to the engine? I know you mentioned that it harms certain components less, but is there a trade off in the lubricating properties?

My dealer doesn't stock Motul so I buy it and bring it in and will need to get it done again soon, thanks

Thank you. So continuing to use full SAPS A40 oil in a car that is specified by Porsche to use this oil will provide the best protection.
Does a mid SAPS oil provide any less protection to the engine? I know you mentioned that it harms certain components less, but is there a trade off in the lubricating properties?

The X-cess gen1 or gen2 have the A40 approval and will work best for your GTS. Some vendors may not have gen2 yet so I wanted to clarify that you'll be fine with either.
