I already have the 4/4S harness. So I need to see if the other end (the one on the car that feeds the bumper harness) has those three pins wired.

Thanks guys for your work!
This center light already works on 4/4S 991.1, so it should work for a GTS or a S (like mine).

I now have to find a 4/4S rear bumper for my 991.
I want this light bar, so if anyone has a bumper for sale…

Well, that is the question. The mod that taps into the tag lights does not work on the 991.1 (see polobai's posts) it does work on a 991.2. We have determined that this is because the light bar operates at 5v and not 12v. Teh tag lights on the 991.2 are 5v and on the 991.1 they must be 12v. But all is not lost. As long as you provide it a 5v input it will work. My next step is to pull the bumper on my 991.1 GTS and check if the harness plug on the car has the pins already wired, then it should be plug and play as long as you use the 4/4S bumper harness. If that circuit is left out of the wiring on the non 4 cars, then it can work, but you need to put a voltage regulator in-between where you tap the 12v source and the plug to the center bar light to drop the voltage to 5v.

Yes, I understand and thanks again for your explanations. What I meant is that it’s working on oem .1 4/4S, so someone with a .1 4/4S could told us how it’s wired on his car…
In my opinion (but it’s just a thought), it should be connected with tail lights, and not with license plate lights.

nice. What centerlock wheel set do you have on the GTS?

I had my dealership service department remove my bumper and try to make this work. Unfortunately, the wiring harness for the non-4 cars do not have the connector (not sure what the technical name is) for attaching the light bar. And they told me that changing out the wiring harness would be very costly. I appreciate jskenefick's effort in trying to make it work in the 991.1. If there is a will, there is a way!

The 4/4S specific harness (the one that attaches inside the bumper cover and powers the lights) is about $100. It is part No. 991-612-898-03
The question is whether the other side of the harness is wired for the specific wires to the center light. If it is, then its a simple swap. If it doesn't then yes, I would expect it to be costly.

The service department used a harness from the 4/4S to try to make it work in my C2 GTS. They could not get it to work.

That tells me the pins for the center light connection are not present in the other side of the connector.

When I was first looking at doing this modification last year before I got my car. I purchased both the 4/4S harness and the non 4/4S harness to compare the two and yes, the non 4/4S harness does not have the pins for the center light connection. Porsche builds their wiring harnesses to match the configuration of your car and does not include any extra wiring for options you do not have. That's when I looked at how else I could get the wiring to the center light and I tired the license plate Y-cable option which worked rather well since it was right near the connection for the center light. I still have both harnesses available if anybody wants to buy one of them.

It works on a 991.2 because the source you tapped is 5v. That source on a 991.1 is apparently 12v. So you need to put a converter in to step the voltage down. I will wire one up when I get the converter next week and see if it works.

The multimeter is set to voltage rage “50” so the voltage looks to be slightly more than the 10 mark or “about 12”.

3 wire pigtail port that was removed from the light and measured.
This voltage needs to be reduced to 5v and then it should work. Just have to wire a converter in.

correction-it’s 12v on the 991.2 and 5v on the 991.1

Now I am confused. The center light bar I have operates at 5v. I have not checked the voltage in any of the connections on my 991.1, but from what cajerseyboy posted, it looked like his tap was sending 12v to the connection.
