Default Ignition Coil Fried, 6,800 Miles

Hello everyone,

I live on Long Island, NY, was traveling into Manhattan last week, I was just about to enter the Midtown Tunnel, about 35 miles from home, for an evening client call, when the car started sputtering/bucking and threw 2 messages (1) Engine Failure, Contact Service , Car is Okay to Drive and (2) PSM Failure, same message, okay to drive. I proceeded to my appointment downtown, parked the car, turned it off, waited 5 minutes, fired it up, no messages, no sputters etc. Drove it home later that night , no problems, codes etc. I called and made an appointment for the next day, I had a bad ignition coil Wasn't expecting that at 6,800 miles, hopefully it was an anomaly, infant mortality etc. Has anyone else experienced this?
My car is a base '17, manual, bought it new.

BTW- I had a Boxster manual as a loaner, a lot of fun, but not a 911.

Owner's manual says to change plugs every two years so sometimes time factors come into play before mileage. How long have you had the car for? Did you buy it new? Plug/coils usually act up at the end of their life when its cold/wet out and react better with higher temp. I'm sure the dealer will resolve it though.

I know that pencil coil failures are a common problem with 981s. Would be surprised if the 991s use a different part. However, when I recently replaced all 6 coils and plugs on my 981, I noticed that the new coils have a new part number (one digit higher) from the old. It may be that Porsche has updated the coils for better reliability.

No, not every two years. The correct interval is 4 yeas/40K miles. For the 991.1.

The 991.2 is slightly different.

I bought the car new last October with less than 100 miles. I had 6,888 miles on it when this happened. I had just returned from a trip to Boston the week-end prior with some (cough) spirited driving. The car had its 1st oil change/service in March. One year or 10K, the car had been sitting on the dealers lot for a while, thus the 1 year service.

Dealer in Huntington Station, NY took care of it, no problems, hassles etc. I have had nothing but excellent service from them, on this car and the '09 Carrera S I traded for this car.

My mistake, may have mis read. Correct interval would be 4 yr/ 40k miles. Glad to hear your local dealer is taking care of you and even on the past car as well. Loyalty goes a long way with these types of cars.

It's just a defective coil pack, zero to do with maintenance. Start to finish 20-30 min job to replace. Not a big deal.

I have 12k miles on my 2013 and can feel they are not at 100% but no misfire codes or anything and goes away once it warms up a bit. Going to do new plugs and coil pack here shortly though
